I thought that money was the ultimate motivator. Most college players are on short-term contracts. NFL players play harder in contract years.

If you grew up in the hood or in a singlewide and Momma still lives there, wouldn't you play even harder and go even more balls to the wall?

Everyone loves nostalgia and "the old days used to be better," but what if it's misplaced?

There is little accountability in the current model of NIL

It isn’t necessarily the “playing hard” it’s the training that suffers imo

I guess you haven't taken into account what happens when 18 year old kids get paid more than some of the coaches.

Players were always payed.

At least they were here in the SEC and at the other programs that want to win (USC, Michigan, tOSU, FSU, Oklahoma, Texas...you get the idea).

It comes down to coaches getting teams to buy in for real. See Kirby at UGA or Kiffin at Ole Miss as examples of teams with players who play hard every week even if it's a meaningless bowl game.

They are like coaches. They are going to get paid even if they fail. There is no incentive to work hard,

If you look at old roster, they were made up of instate kids who dreamed of playing for a school. They played for the state and the school. Now, players are moving from on team to the next for a bigger payday and no real “love” for the school.

This might be more displaced nostalgia. If you take away the Rudies and a handful of white guys on scholarship, that just ain't true.

The large majority of brothas who've played for LSU over the years grew up dreaming of playing for for the Saints or the Cowboys, like the majority of brothas who've played for Georgia grew up dreaming of playing for hte Falcons or the Cowboys.

What if the next contract is always right around the corner?

Three ways to think about it:

1 - the old way. I want to bust my arse so I can get into the league

2 - hybrid. I want to bust my arse so I can extend my NIL as a safety net and get into the league

3 - some dumb school just gave me $5M guaranteed. I don't have to do shite. Some other dumb team will offer me $2M to transfer. Then another $1M to transfer after that. I leave school with $8M and didn't even have to get a CTE along the way

Doesn't matter if you're making a million bucks or playing in an amateur League any athlete that I've been around always wants to win it's about winning and that's why these kids move around and playing time

Cut folks some slack. It takes a minute to realize you're watching a fundamentally new sport being played in the same jerseys and stadiums as the old one.

Development is what is lacking, that's what happens during the fall, summer and during the weeks between games. Everyone wants to win on gameday, but the games are won and lost in the preparation.

The entire sport is being dumbed down and there aren't really many elite players anymore.

And in many ways, that is a return to the old days. Not the old days as in 10-20 years, which was likely the peak of college football. But the old days in terms of 40 years ago when things like having a great QB was somewhat of a rarity. Back before players really had the type of weight training they have now. Back before every game was filmed and players had lots of film to study.

Take a look at Joe Namath stats back in the day. Future hall of fame QB. His stats at Alabama:

54.3 comp%(64 his best year). 25 TDS and 19 INT - career stats. 2713 yards total - for his career.

His first year, he threw 13 TDs and 8 INT
2nd year - 7 TD and 7 INT
3rd year - 5 TD, 4 INT (64% comp that year). That was in a National Championship year.

Development, both mentally and physically is what suffers. The NFL scouts & coaches have to see it in the product they're now getting.

the limited studies done on this shows this only strongly correlates with WRs.
There's also a small correlation with younger QBs, but that could just be normal progression.

I think most young men probably live more in the today than the tomorrow, even if they’d rather be more future minded.
