As a alabama fan it drives me crazy when Wommack brings out the as I call it "Prevent you from winning" defense. I cant stand to see Aguilar get 15 yards a pop down 17 with 2 minutes to go and drive down the field like that. I would rather just see him send an all out blitz every play and if they score than kudos to them. There is no benefit to the prevent defense at all there not gonna win the game down 17 with that little amount of time so you might as well just do what you have been doing smh.

It’s a tough decision, but I agree with you
If a team hasn’t broken those big plays the entire game why defend like that in the very end
But of course, the flipside is you’re trying to prevent the opponent from getting seven points and only taking a couple seconds off the clock

Because in that situation, giving up a 70 yard TD pass over the top would be inexcusable…

Yes in the case that if we were up by like 7 or 10 but down 17 is a different story there not coming back from that so play the defense that was successful the other 3 and half quarters

You’re correct. But DC’s can also get in self preservation mode.

The clock doesn't stop after a first down anymore, so the prevent defense is even more viable now.

It enrages me, You've played successful defense for 3.5 quarters, but now you change the scheme? Give open crossing routes underneath with clear sideline access?

Depends on the score and time remaining/timeouts remaining ad field position, but I tend to agree with you in most cases.
Up 7 with 1 minute left and no opponent timeouts and they have to go 80 yards, sure play the prevent.
Up 7 with 2 minutes left and opponent has all their timeouts and they have to go 80 yards, hell no... play a real defense.
It made more sense to do it 20 years ago before offenses became more pass oriented, QBs passing ability drastically improved, and offenses were given tons of advantages by rule changes.

Yes and seeing that Tennessee had more yards of offense against us even though we clearly dominated enrages me knowing that 75 of those yards came on that last bs drive
