And, the NCAA's string of terrible decisions just continues to march on. This won't end well...

They know that as long as they don't pay athletes they're going to get dragged to court for every rule. And they're going to lose.

The answer is right in front of them and they won't take it.

As long as they aren’t betting on their own sport I guess the “adults” in the room don’t see a problem. Don’t mean there aren’t problems brewing here, because there are, but they are making a shite ton of money now. If they wanna piss it away by gambling, nobody’s gonna stop em

Auburn will monetize this somehow.

Maybe Draftkings NIL deal or in stadium betting on MLB.

Maybe sell NFL parlay sheets at the games on Saturdays.

That's the crux of the issue. If there's no contract, you cannot restrict an individual's right to engage in free commerce.

Once you have a contract you can, which is why people can be banned from pro leagues for gambling.

But the NCAA still thinks they can have "amateur sports"

The NCAA is the entity that is altering the sport. I agree that they want to hold onto this outdated ideology of “shamateurism” but sooner or later, if the game is to evolve and be enjoyable, then a new governing body needs to take shape and reign in the nonsense.

That’s the theory, but how easy will it be for Vegas to buy athletes with a few well-placed pro “bets”?

Oh I sense there will be a lot of that shite going on. And then we got a huge issue to untangle. And suspensions, firings, indictments. The legal departments will be on 24 hour call

Nah, that's dangerous as hell. People aren't just gambling on apps on their phone; if you have a lot of money involved you will see guys hit casinos and books. There's the risk that someone important gets a little too crazy, and loses big, and then somebody cuts him a deal... with some performance incentives under the table.

Will most guys throw a game? Probably not. But there are some who will shave things a bit; "we still won" is their internal justification. Take LSU (as a complete hypothetical), they're a 9+ pt favorite over SC this weekend. Shucks, we're struggling on offense anyway, who's going to notice anything if we only win by 4?
That's the type of thing you want to avoid at all costs.
