They know that as long as they don't pay athletes they're going to get dragged to court for every rule. And they're going to lose.

As long as they aren’t betting on their own sport I guess the “adults” in the room don’t see a problem. Don’t mean there aren’t problems brewing here, because there are, but they are making a shite ton of money now. If they wanna piss it away by gambling, nobody’s gonna stop em

Auburn will monetize this somehow.
Maybe Draftkings NIL deal or in stadium betting on MLB.

That's the crux of the issue. If there's no contract, you cannot restrict an individual's right to engage in free commerce.
Once you have a contract you can, which is why people can be banned from pro leagues for gambling.
But the NCAA still thinks they can have "amateur sports"

The NCAA is the entity that is altering the sport. I agree that they want to hold onto this outdated ideology of “shamateurism” but sooner or later, if the game is to evolve and be enjoyable, then a new governing body needs to take shape and reign in the nonsense.

Their sport...never...but say a Football player wants to bet who wins the masters, World Cup, World Series etc who cares..not like the NCAA cares anyway.

Will most guys throw a game? Probably not. But there are some who will shave things a bit; "we still won" is their internal justification. Take LSU (as a complete hypothetical), they're a 9+ pt favorite over SC this weekend. Shucks, we're struggling on offense anyway, who's going to notice anything if we only win by 4?
That's the type of thing you want to avoid at all costs.
