Some of the tips in this link might help you: How to Retain More of What You Read.
I've always heard it helps to have a purpose when you start reading something and to imagine you have to teach it to somebody else (i.e. the Feynman Technique).

I have heard that 20 minutes of reading is a good break point. Your mind starts to wander after that point and comprehension suffers.
This may very depending on the individual.

I feel like this would depend on what you are reading you know. Like reading something you aren't interested in / are forced to read vs. reading a good novel or even something more scientific / technical but that you are very interested in.
Also, OP, I hear that this is supposed to be a good guide for more retention but haven't ever gotten around to looking at it myself.
