Malik Willis to enter transfer portal

quote:

AUBURN, Alabama — Auburn quarterback Malik Willis has entered his name into the NCAA transfer portal.

A source close to the backup quarterback tells Auburn Undercover he entered his name in the portal Thursday afternoon after informing the coaching staff at Auburn of his intentions to leave the program. Willis is a junior and was set to be the third-string quarterback after battling for the starting job in the spring. Bo Nix or Joey Gatewood, both freshmen, will compete for the starting job in August.

Willis entered his name in the transfer portal Thursday, the first day of summer classes at Auburn University.

I read today that around 450 players have entered the portal and less than 20% found a P5 destination to transfer to.

Not a surprise and has been expected. It wouldn't shock me if he actually transfers and starts for someone... He's not bad, Gatewood and Nix just have way more potential.

I'll be honest - super disappointed as an Auburn fan that we won't have him anymore. His accuracy looked really good at the A day game for the first time....ever. Was really hoping we would get a chance to see him in action this year.

Thanks for the time in the O&B. Hope he makes it somewhere. Sucks he couldn’t do it here.

Best of luck to him. I’m glad he chose to be an Auburn Tiger. Wish it could’ve worked out for him

Don’t blame him. Bill belichick just picked up our QB and is about to show us how terrible Gus is as developing one. Willis needs to get out ahead of this and find a place where he can showcase his talents and not rely on the chance that some coach or scout will just see his true potential like what happened with JS

You do realize you’re talking about the 3rd string QB, right? it’s not like Willis is going to take a casual stroll to another P5 program and start immediately

And a 3 star coming out of high school. I wish the kid the very best and hate to see him go, but sitting #3 behind a RS freshman and a true freshman it's clearly the best decision for him if he wants playing time.

I know. Reading this thread it's like Willis could have been a great P5 QB and now he even has NFL talent.

I hope the best for him, but he was never going to be a good SEC QB. He might have a chance at a place like Samford, but that's about it. IMO

Hate to see Malik go but I understand it. The offense has gone away from the only way he could have played.

Yes he was a 3 star but he had some talent. Was hoping it would be here as I have followed him for a long time. His high school coach works for me now. Tells great stories about Malik.

A lot of people don’t know that he only played 1 year of QB in high school. He stepped in before his senior year and started for Roswell due to injuries and took them to the state championship. He carries the team to what should have been the win by scoring on a long drive against Grayson with just seconds on the clock only to watch the defense allow Grayson to score and beat them on 3 plays. Clock expired on the winning td.

Wish him the best and will pull for him no matter where he goes.
