Gus Malzahn isn't ready to promote JaTarvious Whitlow to Auburn's starter at running back heading into SEC action, but the redshirt freshman could see his role in the backfield increase if he keeps up his early-season play.

quote:

Through two games, Whitlow is Auburn's leading rusher with 150 yards and a touchdown while averaging 6.82 yards per carry, with the touchdown marking the Tigers' biggest play of the season -- a 10-yard run up the gut for the game-winning score against Washington in Week 1.

quote:

He's a bigger back and, I think, as long as he holds onto the football, his role could continue to grow," Malzahn said.

quote:

As Auburn heads into its SEC slate, Lindsey and Malzahn will need to figure out how to narrow down reps at running back, though it has become evident early on that the Tigers have a good thing in Whitlow, the former three-star athlete who signed as a receiver before moving to running back and redshirting last season due to an ankle injury.

quote:

Well, I think we've got an idea of the guys that we're going to play early on and see how the game goes," Lindsey said. "I do think Shaun Shivers came in and gave us a lift. He gave us a spark there that I thought was really nice. He's an electric guy. I think Boobee and Kam both did some good things.

quote:

We've got to make sure that those guys continue to improve and get the reps. We're going to need them. I was impressed with that. Asa got in and put the ball on the ground one time, but he did a really good job blocking on several other plays. I think between those four, we'll see how things play out."

How I would distribute carries

Boobee - 50%
Kam - 25%
Shivers - 25%

Seems like there is a clear 3 man rotation worth using

Paw, I don't disagree with that at all. Definitely rotate those three with Shivers being the change-of-pace. I'm not as pessimistic about Kmart as some, but I think the Boobee / Kam split could and should be anywhere from 50/50 to 75/25 in favor of Boobee, depending on which one is finding success in a given game

So disappointed Asa Martin hasn’t made a bigger splash. Really expected him to win the starting position before the season started.

We are two games into his true freshman year

This was a pretty unreasonable expectation. I can see he him taking on a bigger role as the season progresses.

Fair point. I just wrongly assumed he would be like some of those five stars that come in and take over from day one.

Still don't understand why everyone is so down on Kam. I like all three of Shivers/Kam/Boobie thus far, each of them do some things well.

I think it should be:
Kam: 55%
Boobie: 30%
Shivers: 15%
At least until one of Boobie/Shivers wrestles it away and it's clear.

Well when you fumble on your very first carry.

Kam - 25%

Because of his speed in the flat, I'd get him lots of screen passes in addition to handoffs.

Oh Kam definitely still has a role in this offense. I think he did a solid job vs Washington but I also think it's clear that Whitlow just has bigger skillset

But he's a weapon that absolutely needs to be used consistently. Would love to see more 2 back sets where we get both Kam & Boobee on field together

I wonder how things would be today if Stidham had hit Asa on that wheel route. He was wide open for a TD and Stidham overthrew him by 5 yds.

What are the chances of Shivers truly wrestling it away? I like what I've seen but can he survive as a #1 in a Gus offense?

I tend to agree but need more data.

I mainly just think it's funny how quickly guys move on from the starter at any position when they aren't a superstar day one.

Kam has been fine thus far.

3.6 yards per carry against Washington is not "fine." Take away that 4th down run for 19 yards and he had 21 carries for 61 yards 2.9 yards per carry.

What he did against ASU is meaningless

playing the "take away all his good runs and...." is dumb and serves no purpose other than bolstering a weak argument
