We can let his body of work at Auburn tell you the answer.

We would need a real AD first.

He only made it to one NCAA tourney and lost big in the first round. He was a hot commodity for that and because he was a calipari disciple. That's not really a proven coach he was considered an up and coming coach.

He got fired (or is going to get fired) from UCLA because three Final Fours in 10 seasons wasn't good enough. If he went to one Final Four, heck, maybe even an Elite Eight at Auburn...he'd have a lifetime contract.

I think Howland is a great coach but you need to understand that he his head has been on the chopping block for a lot of things.

UCLA has had 3 losing seasons in 6 decades. Ben Howland has coached two of them. In the past 5 years, he hasn't made it to the second weekend once in the tournament and has missed the tournament twice (which is hard in the Pac 10 since they have been down)

He has been missing on recruiting battles as well as had discipline problems with his team.

He is like the Urban Meyer of basketball to me. Great coach who is just getting derailed in his finals years at a location. When he gets to a new job though his resume will tell people he is great so great players in the region will sign with his school and his coaching ability will make them see early success which will lay a foundation for more.

Howland is a PROVEN head coach. He may get fired because he didn't meet the expectations of a school with a billion national titles. And I'm not saying it wouldn't be justified because he had ridiculous talent at UCLA just about every year.

But we're talking about Auburn here. Howland is a very good coach and gets his teams to the tournament nearly every year. If Jacobs had any sense, he'd call Howland's agent as soon as Howland were let go and see what it would take to get him. Probably a pipe dream, but Howland would be hands down the best coach in Auburn's basketball history.
