quote:

As the tough one-and-done possessions piled higher, Auburn looked drained of the shooting confidence that made it an SEC regular-season champion. The stars of the attack — Harper, Brown and Mustapha Heron — pressed too much.

“I think all three of those guys, all three of our best players, kind of — in looking to try to help us win — went and tried to do their own thing sometimes,” Pearl said. “They’ve done that the last month or so. It hasn’t helped us be cohesive offensively.”

If only there were a person on a team... a team "head-leader" as it were... hired and paid to manage team personnel, prepare the team for competition, and make in-game decisions, that could have done something about players "doing their own thing".

Hmmmmmm... if only.

ESAD

It was a stellar season, Pearl is best coach at Auburn, and these guys played way over their heads. No one gave them any chance of success this season. And F'dah the FBI who sat on their secret dossier instead of equally affecting all teams, some of who may still be with intact teams in play.

You frickers that think Bruce should only ever get credit for good things and never be held responsible for dumpster fires are fricking funny.

If you want to criticize Pearl for having two of his best players suspended for the season on his watch, then go ahead.

But having a third go down to injury and putting together a team that was one dimensional is not on him.

Funny how he took his team further than any you may have ever seen. .. must really suck to be such a fair weather fan.

Two more wins and he'd be the one worth 7@47 million.

I mean he's not wrong.... Ever since McElmore went down those guys have tried to overcompensate and the result is us playing less team ball on offense & more guys trying to win it all themselves

You can't really bench them because our rotation is so thin. Guys got more selfish at end of year trying to make up for McElmore's absence. Some of that is on Pearl for not getting them stay locked in but he's also not wrong pointing out guys tried to do more than they needed too

Yea, AU became a team that needed to hit threes and needed fouls called when they got shots blocked on layups, neither of those happened over last several weeks. We also didn’t get to use our player implicated in FBI probe like everyone else did.

Funny how like 15 more teams were named in yahoo report but media doesn’t include them in the scandal.

Also, AU players realized no Mclemore was too much to overcome. Something changed the last few weeks. No energy, no hope. As Mustapha said....kind of just shut it down after winning reg season. Bruce even stopped yelling at them on sideline.

Also not saying Pearl is blameless. He's head coach, he's got to get these guys to buy in and run his system. He did a great job of that up until McElmore's injury. Got em to do it one more time against Bama down Heron as well. But to finish year out Heron/Harper/Brown all tried to be the hero to make up for McElmore's absence and it failed because they aren't good enough individually to do that. A coach pointing that out doesn't mean he's just some bystander. He's pointing out one of the many problems team had finishing the season. Not sure why that makes you so mad

I can say he did a bad job coaching the past month and still think he did a good job on the season

I think some of these bad losses are on Pearl. I don't think we are a good basketball team without McLemore. Some here think we should've just been able to keep playing the same quality ball without him.

23-3 with McLemore
3-5 without McLemore

But keep melting over Bruce. Awesome season and already looking forward to next year.

I know the tournament is all about guard play, but you have to have a low post presence. This team lost two of it's best low post players in McLemore and Wiley. I like Spencer a lot, but he doesn't demand a double team like the other guys do.

Good, because thats what I’ve been saying.

Except there are many right here in this very thread that go into vapors at any instance of pointing out that Bruce is in any way responsible for the end-of-season dumpster fire.

I love BP but his teams are frustrating. There is little discipline and a lot of sloppiness. We wen't stretches this year were we played really good defense and looked really fine tuned on offense with a lot of movement spacing and ball screens. Then there were times like yesterday we play 1on1 ball with shitty defense and no effort.

I think that's just a trademark of BP teams. He doesn't demand the attention to detail or effort some other coaches do. It's frustrating in that sense but can also be rewarding when we're on fire and playing with a lot of effort.

I think to make it to the round of 32 with this team was a pretty good job considering Bryce is streaky as well and only shoots 3s. Our Pg is way undersized, Horace wouldn't start for Troy U, Murray is 6'3 and Herron is streaky.

If we could grab a GT big in the offseason to go with Samir Doughty we might elevate to a sweet 16 team

There is a lot of dumb in this thread. This says it all. McLemore was way more important than anyone realized. Our D and our O both suffered significantly in his absence. We likely would have been NIT bound without him all season. Maybe not even NIT.

One dimensional?

lol, we were no dimensional.

Great season blah blah blah, yea that's true but our tournament performances were flat out embarrassing and everybody should be held accountable.
