The cost of declining attendance at games

Here’s an interesting Bloomberg article about the cost of empty stadium seats.
LINK
They don’t really mention a lot of P5 schools, but the economics are interesting.
Previously, I don’t think AU has had any problem filling our stadium. However, you have to think the PTB will take into consideration what happens to attendance over the coming months and immediate future if the team continues to struggle.
CGM’s buyout is still a whopping number, but there has to be considerations about a large buyout now versus what we lose in attendance and other football-related revenue.

The bottom line is that it's more expensive and more of a hassle than it used to be
The convenience of watching from a tailgate or home has become better than the stadium experience
That's the problem

I actually wonder if the aging of America has something to do with this.

Yep THIS. They are the ones with the bulk of the money in the economy. This is why the stock market is about to be in big trouble for a very long time.

It absolutely is. It’s also younger generations’ attention span and need for immediate gratification.
Pro baseball is a great example. When I was young, I loved going to games to watch the sport. Now, it’s all about the experience. Case in point the new Braves stadium. There’s a zip line. So, you attract kids with this but what happens once they get too old for the zip line. You aren’t creating baseball fans this way.

I agree. My 65" 4k tv at the house with every angle I would want makes it very tempting to stay at the house. We tend to have a lot of games that are around lunch +/- an hour or two so it makes it a giant pain in my arse to get there for the game from 2 hours away. Then the other games are late games where you get out at midnight and then have to drive 2 hours after you get out of town.
Couple all this with seats getting narrower and narrower and people getting bigger and bigger make it highly uncomfortable to be in the stadium. I have ofter said that I wish we would add another addition to the stadium but make all the seats really comfortable. Be the nicest stadium, not the most people.

All good points. Add a subpar product on the field and who would want to attend games.

Subpar? We are getting used to seeing puppies killed! Remember the Jeremy Johnson fiasco? Chizik's last year? Now we have this new nightmare! Good Lord, how far do we have to fall to start DEMANDING excellence? As much as I hate to mention that team across the state, but remember when they were bad? What did they do? Where are they now?

Well I personally think all stadiums should go to chair backs instead of bleacher seating. I’ve heard one too many complaints working the games about people sitting in their seats because a couple of fat arse people take too much space. It’d cut down the capacity, but the stadiums would probably be full on a more regular basis.

Interesting, but there's also an impact to the local economy, especially for small town schools. I'm sure even a noon versus a 7:00 kick-off makes a difference there.

I was a scholarship seat holder, with seats on the 50. Went to every home game, and several away games every year. The Jeremy Johnson fiasco broke me, along with the increasing costs of the seats to see a glorified snuff film.

LOL! They have people paying $$$$ to sit on the 50, and they are sitting on cold aluminum! As long as people are willing to pay big bucks to see this crap, pay 5* hotel prices and get Motel 6 quality, we are doomed.

Look at who and what young people admire these days. Instagram/social media attention whores, e-sports, livestreaming panhandlers. Going to get a lot worse.

One reason we have chair backs on our seat. Not a real chair, but it's some padding and better yet, defines your space.

If football attendance struggles, Auburn as a city could dramatically change

I know I sound like an old man, but Auburn has done it to themselves. Auburn has slowly eroded the game day experience over the last decade or so, and while I still have fun, it is definitely more of a hassle. Where I once parked, I can no longer park.
Where I moved to park after that change, I can no longer park without paying substantial annual $. Same thing with tailgating. Now, it's just a pain to haul stuff in because I have to park too far away.
I'm not sure why we still have a band with as much crap as they pump thru the jumbotron and sound system but I've beat that horse to death in another thread.
Blah, blah, blah...I hate change.
//rant over.

So long as people keep paying and going to games, Gus stays.
I'm certainly not calling for boycott, but whether Gus stays or goes is most likely purely financed based at this point. I doubt he has much support other than Kristi and Leath.
At this point I'm just hoping we make the Birmingham Bowl and grab the $2 million payout from it. That would suck losing out on bowl money.
