This is a sad story, but it proves your point as I remember being on the highways when the following came across the radio.

There was a family that had flown into DIA and were headed to the mountains on I-70 going West. CDOT had been doing major upgrading and had placed a huge girder up but had not secured it completely and it collapsed.

It sheared the top half of the car off and the bottom half kept traveling for a short period of time. Going a few miles per hour faster, or getting their rental a few minutes faster and they are telling a story of close calls, but instead it was their final trip.
