Fly fishing on the Frying Pan River near Basalt or the Roaring Fork through Carbondale should be on anyone’s list of considerations for May/June in colorado

I live in Golden and fly fish a lot. Hit up the toilet bowl this summer and I highly recommend going there (just below the dam at the frying pan). You can pull fish out like this all day

May is a tweener month. You can’t really go skiing and you can’t always enjoy the high country, but still plenty to do.

The wife and I flew there a few years back. It was in early June I believe. I bought Brit Floyd tickets for Red Rocks. We stayed in west Denver the first night. Drove up to Frisco the first day and spent some time there at Dillon reservoir I believe.

We drove up to one of the 13K peeks then headed to Red rocks that night. Awesome place and I will go back there

the second day we drove to RMNP and stayed a few days. We actually stayed in Estes park. Some cheesy hotel.

We did some hikes to waterfalls and some basic stuff but it was a awesome trip. RMNP was unreal. I have been to Yellowstone 3 times and I think I enjoyed Rocky Mountain National better

We only had 4 days to stay and that included the concert night. I will definitely go back and stay longer

Been many a trip: Summer, Spring, Winter, and Fall they're all good but especially Summer. Can't count days spent paddling, hiking, climbing, mtn biking, skiing, and playing music with friends, acquaintances, and nearly a wife. And if you ever get the chance the wild flower hikes at elevation are perhaps the best of all.

Just couple snagged off internet.

And I believe May might be good for that area... others will know.

Anytime from may-September/October are great times.

May might be a little early but things should be blooming then. June-sep are the money months. Perfect weather

October is great if you want to still catch some of the aspens changing, but I would plan for the first two weeks of October. Doesn’t take long for the leaves to fall off the aspens once they change

A Few pics from our trip. Would like to go fishing there next time we go...

We are not experienced hikers or were really not in that kind of shape when we went. And not equipped. We had done a few of the short 1 mile hikes to waterfalls and then a guy at the hotel talked us into trying Ouzel Falls. I think that is it. Sounded easy and all. i thought I would have to carry my wife out of there. It killed her feet and we were just not prepared for it. Enjoyed it but will be better equipped next time we do that.

Was a great time though. Enjoyed every second of it

A-Bay laughs at this sentiment, especially after they had 4th of July skiing a year or two ago.

And check back in this thread closer to May and I’ll update you on Covid related restrictions for the different areas of the state, though I don’t expect them to be very limiting by May

Wave 2 of the vaccine rollout is supposed to start around end of February/beginning of March. I don't think we'll be back to fully operational by then. But it'll be better for sure.

Also, if ROMO still has their reservation system in place for entry, if you get there before the reservation times start, you can get in without a res. Getting their early is definitely recommended if you're going to Bear Lake, because that area gets slammed worst than black friday at walmart.

Was just at A Basin snowboarding last weekend and there is not much snow in the mountains right now. Hopefully it changes soon, but lots of earth showing through the mountains. It was not very cold either. Was a nice few days of snowboarding but not a deep base of snow at the moment. It’s base is only 25-28” and that is close to minimum for most ski resorts.

We’ve had a lot of small snows. None that I can think of that have dropped the 2’ days that we need up there

Hey I was there last Saturday as well. Went to Monarch this morning, and they're at 24" right now. But they're supposed to get dumped on the next few days.

I was going to add that Trail Ridge Road will probably not be open in May. Which connects the two sides of RMNP
Isn't it tradition to wait and open Trail Ridge Road on Memorial Day weekend? I seem to remember reading many years ago that the traditional opening was the Friday of the long weekend, and that people would literally wait and follow the plows through as it opens.

Bringing this back with some good news:

We've moved to "Version 3.0" of our Covid-Dial, which is supposed to give local municipalities more control over their restrictions. Gov. Polis also announced that they plan to move to another Covid-Dial in mid-April, around the same time that all residents are eligible to receive the vaccine.

So looks like you'll be coming at the perfect time to experience re-opening.

That's good news. I heard it is dumping right now on you guys.

Jyrdis, did you put together your itinerary for this trip? What have you decided to do?

We got a few feet over a 36 hour period of time several weekends ago. That sucked several small snows since then

Things are pretty open here. There’s some coffee shops and a few restaurants here and there that are only doing take-out and delivery but things are feeling pretty normal. You’ll wait a little longer on weekends for some restaurants but

Eh, just a dusting in the springs.

Saw pics from Monarch today, they said they got 8", but they also had a pic of a guy clearing snow and it was as tall as him once cleared.
