Have I though? Do you feel the talent we have recruited the last 4-5 years is sufficient to compete for championships or are you satisfied with our recent level of recruiting?

Yep. Waiting for this supposed great recruiting staff to start actually recruiting. Can't afford to have 2 subpar classes back to back.

I have said this numerous times. We have to show the ability to develope. Gus gave zero reason for a highly ranked blue chip to play at AU. This will take a few seasons to reverse if we are lucky. Outside of hiring Saban, there isn't anyone who could turn us around in a few months.

Did anyone realistically claim this staff would be "great recruiters", at least early on?

Only thing I ever saw was the expectation that it would take some time for a staff that has a lot of people not familiar with the area, it would take time. Plus, weren't we all happy we found a coach that developed players and went after guys he wanted, regardless of what pay sites rank him as? When did that narrative change?

In reality, the recruiting rankings right now are pretty much crap, even more than usual. These kids haven't been able to do camps or anything. This year will be probably the most volatile rankings throughout the season as any year we've ever had.

Bobo and Friend have a reputation for recruiting. Not sure any of the others really do. If anything, people pointed out their scouting and development.

They’ll have to learn to recruit at the highest level regardless of whatever their reputation is. You’re right that we cannot afford two bad classes in a row but we also can’t expect top guys to commit early to a staff they’ve never met.

Most of us didn’t know who Harsin was (or couldn’t name him if we recognized him) before he was hired here. Most of these ‘22 and ‘23 kids didn’t either It’s going to take time and it’s going to be a drag for a while. That’s just the reality of hiring new names and faces during a 15 month NCAA recruiting dead period.

All of this is true to an extent. There have been camps the last few months, however. The rankings are quite behind but I think they’re pretty decent despite the massive disadvantage.

The other truth is that the mainstays of the college football playoffs are routinely in the top 5 of the recruiting rankings. Good development and scouting will help us close the gap but we’ve gotta get the Jimmy’s and Joe’s if we realistically expect to have a consistent chance at competing for titles.

I’m not sure if that’s going to happen or not but, either way, it’s going to take time to shake out.

Correct. And we still have a segment of our fanbase that wanted to keep Gus despite the data points telling us otherwise. Now we have their counter-parts wanting instant gratification.

Exactly and in recruiting, the top level programs have already built a relationship over the last 2-3 years with players in the 2022 class, that this staff is just now trying to interact with.

Outside of Carnell and Bobo and Friend familiar w recruiting in this area, we are starting from scratch, and It seems like these coaches feel there are quite a few 3 star guys they can develop, and bc they are 3 stars, were not getting strong interest from the elite schools.
Also, I think this staff is being strategic, and sticking there efforts on 4 and 5 stars they feel they have a shot at, but not relying on that as there first base for recruiting.

The later recruits for the 2023 and beyond I feel we will start seeing more offers and visits to the majority of top 4 and 5 star guys, especially in the southeast.

I think this staff is recruiting smartly for now...

Powell Gordon aside, the 3-star’s we’ve offered have pretty robust offer sheets and a majority of them will be 4-stars by signing day. I don’t always say this, either. We have a pretty good track record in these recruiting threads of identifying who will eventually get the bump. You can just see it in the offer sheet.

I don’t think their strategy is to pick off the weak from the pack But we’ll probably take a few guys this season that we otherwise wouldn’t in the future.

I actually remember specifically complaining about the lack of recruiters on the staff. It was one of the main reasons I wanted to keep TWill (Not trying to start that convo back up though lol)

With that said.. Until visits can actually happen and we play a couple games I think we just have to be patient. I've had to catch myself a few times and remind myself of that.

It was expected that recruiting would suck for a while after the coaching change. I’m not sure what the ceiling is for these coaches either until I hear more about their strategy and their prowess. I still cannot even tell you some of our coaches’ names. Harsin, Caddy, Mason, and the rest are...crickets.

I was also in the camp of keeping him, but he landed a DC gig so it ended up being a moot point.

I’m in wait and see mode for this staff. Between them being new, severely limited on the contact they can have with recruits, only HS film to go off of for evaluations, and rankings being far from perfect... I am going to withhold any real judgement until the dust starts settling. Harsin has already shown to have an eye for the QB position with Geriner showing out recently.

I know you were down on Bobo (in recruiting) and I was pumping the breaks on Friend. And those were the only two really being hyped as recruiters.

They’ve gotten a lot of offers out already for 2023 and Harsin and Bobo both have been to a lot of these camps that coaches aren’t allowed to be at right now because their kids are competing there. It’s going to take some time and our judgments on this staff will be incomplete for a while. We’re going to have to be patient with eachother in this thread

Meh, anyone making critical judgments at this juncture are just setting themselves up for lots of frustration. I said early on Harsin will need a good two to three years to see some meaningful recruiting gains and success.

I’m in cruise mode and letting it all unfold for a bit.

Or set them up for future heartbreak. See Chizik or Malzahn era for details.
