AUBURN, Alabama — Auburn is expected to hit its average again at the NFL Draft this week.
Four players are projected to be selected in several seven-round mock drafts aggregated by 247Sports. The leader among them appears to be cornerback Jamel Dean, who is expected to go as quickly as the second round but not fall below the fifth round, according to six mock drafts sampled by Auburn Undercover.
Quarterback Jarrett Stidham appears to be in the same window, with one mock draft listing him as high as the third round and another as low as the fifth round.

Should four Auburn players be selected, it will be in line with the average during the Gus Malzahn era with 21 overall players selected in the last five drafts. The Tigers had five players elected in the NFL Draft in 2018, the most from the program since 2015.
The most curious case for a former Auburn player this year appears to be receiver Darius Slayton, who elected to forego his senior season to jump to the NFL. Three major services list him as a third- or fourth-round prospect, while two other major services do not list him in their seven-round mock drafts.

Jamel Dean, cornerback
What they're saying
"The Colts were 20th in pass defense efficiency last year. Both their pass rush and secondary were responsible for this, so Indianapolis can take a big step toward correcting this problem by obtaining an upgrade at cornerback.
"Jamel Dean has great size (6-2, 208) and tremendous potential." — WalterFootball.com

Projections
Matt Miller, Bleacher Report: No. 10 cornerback
CBSSports.com: 4th round, Los Angeles Rams
DraftWire: 4th round, New York Giants
Chad Reuter, NFL.com: 5th round, Baltimore Ravens
Pro Football Focus: 3rd round, San Francisco 49ers
The Athletic: 3rd round
WalterFootball.com: 2nd round
quote:
Dontavius Russell, defensive tackle
quote:
What they're saying
"Overall, Russell doesn’t have a large impact radius, but he is a stout run plugger with a reliable play motor and scheme-versatility." — Dane Brugler, The Athletic
quote:
Projections
Matt Miller, Bleacher Report: No. 21 defensive lineman
CBSSports.com: 6th round, Los Angeles Rams
DraftWire: N/A
Chad Reuter, NFL.com: 7th round, Arizona Cardinals
The Athletic: 5th or 6th round
WalterFootball.com: N/A
quote:
Darius Slayton, receiver
What they're saying
"Overall, Slayton has inconsistencies to his game, but he is much more than simply a speed demon, showcasing fluid athleticism and length to make catches outside his framework, projecting as a high-upside developmental receiver." — Dane Brugler, The Athletic
quote:
Projections
Matt Miller, Bleacher Report: No. 19 receiver
CBSSports.com: 4th round, Cleveland Browns
DraftWire: N/A
Chad Reuter, NFL.com: N/A
The Athletic: 3rd-4th round
WalterFootball.com: 4th round, Chicago Bears
quote:
Jarrett Stidham, quarterback
What they're saying
"He appeared to hit his ceiling in Auburn’s elementary-level offense, which stressed tempo and quick reads over breaking down coverages and going through whole-field progressions. Stidham has workable tools with his size, arm talent and athleticism, although his mobility is negated by his frustrating internal clock, either holding the ball too long or rushing the process. His tape didn’t have as many second-chance throws as expected, which was disappointing. Overall, Stidham was clearly restricted in the Auburn offense and has the physical traits for the next level, but his slow trigger and inconsistent reaction to pressure are two concerning questions for his long-term future – one of the few legitimate developmental passers in this draft class." — Dane Brugler, The Athletic
Projections
Matt Miller, Bleacher Report: No. 5 quarterback
CBSSports.com: 5th round, Cincinnati Bengals
DraftWire: 5th round, Denver Broncos
Chad Reuter, NFL.com: 4th round, Denver Broncos
The Athletic: 4th round
WalterFootball.com: 3rd round, Denver Broncos
quote:
Free agency projections
Deshaun Davis, linebacker
DraftWire lists him as a seventh-round prospect, but no other media outlet lists him in their seven-round mock draft.
Ryan Davis, receiver
Matt Miller of Bleacher Report ranks him as the 47th-best receiver in the draft, but he is not listed in any major mock drafts.
Montavious Atkinson, linebacker
Chandler Cox, fullback
Andrew Williams, defensive tackle
Darrell Williams, linebacker

Dammit this hurts to read. Even though we've all been saying it for years.

And once again, we'll have guys that end up being steals. Ryan Davis especially IMO.

And another reason why Gus needs an athletic runner for a QB. Not slow throwing white dudes that get scared of pressure.

No one is really projected that high but Dean. I know these guys want to get paid and worry about injury but damn you think another year could've really helped them and Auburn this year. Exception is Stidham...Another year with Gus and his system would have been wasted time.

Ryan Davis not getting draft would be a travesty. That guy earned a roster spot and his name to be called on draft day. I don’t know how others don’t see him as a contributing slot receiver

I was called stupid for saying i did not think SLayton would get drafted.
Looks like he is not a lock.
Just needs one team to pull the trigger in 200 picks.
He might get drafted, but he definitely has work to do to be an nfl quality WR.

Lack of player development. Simple as that

He’s got legit speed and he can help on special teams.
In some ways, maybe he’s better off being a free agent.
He’s got the speed you need in the league.

Dean will most likely be moved to safety at the next level, then again he could be a Richard Sherman type.

Were you called stupid or did people just disagree with you?

Meh, they said the same thing when Cam was drafted. All he did was set all kind of rookie QB records.
Stidham's problems were not the O. He is scared to death of pressure. He just can't handle it. He is also horrible at seeing the field. Every game we would have a guy wide open and he was throwing into double and sometimes triple coverage. He has NFL arm talent but I don't see any other NFL qualities.

It was hard to get a read on what Stidham could do b/c he didn’t fit Gus’ offense. It wouldn't shock me if he became the next Tom Brady. He has the talent. He showed that his soph year. He just needs the right coach and the right offense to further develop it.
LOL
Just no

Considering that this has happened to at least three starting QBs under Gus while at Auburn, it might not just be Stidham.

Welcome to having a one read offense with no slide protections, checks, or hot routes.

He seems stiff in the hips, the same reason Lamarcus Joyner moved, Micah hyde, jabrill peppers.
I should of said in the box/nickel dB type.
I don’t see him being able to cover the ab, obj d hops of the world
