Source: Gus Malzahn's right-hand man leaves for Georgia Tech

quote:

Gus Malzahn is looking for a new right-hand man.

Patrick Suddes, the top man on Auburn’s support staff, has left to take a similar position on Geoff Collins' staff at Georgia Tech, a person familiar with the decision tells Auburn Undercover. Suddes and Collins worked together at Alabama in 2007. His title at Tech is expected to be general manager.

Suddes had been with Auburn since 2016 and served as the assistant athletics director for football handling office work and overseeing the Tigers’ recruiting department. He also managed the roster.

Malzahn said in December he would delegate more of his inner-office duties as a head coach to others on the staff, with Suddes handling most of the duties as Malzahn focused more on play-calling and coaching on the field.

“Pat Suddes is the one that is really my right hand guy,” Malzahn said on Dec. 19. “Me and (athletics director) Allen (Greene) have a great relationship. I’m really looking forward to next season.”

Malzahn took over play-calling on offense in the Music City Bowl. The Tigers defeated Purdue 63-14.

Suddes was Arizona State’s assistant athletics director for recruiting during 2014-15. He served as director of player personnel at Texas under Mack Brown during the 2013 season and spent six seasons before that at Alabama (2007-13) as associate director of football operations. His duties included organizing weekly recruiting meetings, developing monthly recruiting initiatives, coordinating and monitoring all recruiting events and day-to-day activities, overseeing summer camps and coaching clinics, and creating a marketing and strategic plan that included social media expansion and mobile app development.

Suddes spent two seasons under Nick Sabanwith the Miami Dolphins, including 2005 as a defensive assistant and 2006 as an offensive assistant, responsible for quality control, including breakdown and scouting reports of opponents, organizing game plans and self-scouting, in both positions.

Suddes graduated from Alabama in 2005 with a degree in business management. He began his career in 2004 as a recruiting intern at LSU where he assisted in day-to-day recruiting operations and quality control on offense and defense. Suddes is a graduate of Marist High School in Atlanta, Georgia. He is married to the former Rachel Notar from Pell City, Alabama.

It all makes sense now...

And recruiting has suffered the past few years...

Clickbait or not, I am a little concerned in that Suddes was one of the reasons Gus offered up as to why he could effectively manage both the football program as a whole (head coaching duties) and call the offense. I know these sort of administrative positions change hands all the time, but here's to hoping that Gus/Greene have a good candidate in mind who won't take a lot of time/effort to break in. Gus pointed to being overwhelmed from a time/responsibility standpoint when he relinquished playcalling to Rhett in 2016. We obviously don't want to duplicate the same problem. I want someone in the office that knows what they're doing, so that Gus can focus on those HC duties which actually require the HC himself, and the offense.

I’m going to miss his recruiting heads up tweets. His taking of a “similar job” doesn’t sound like a promotion. What gives?

Well, one of his responsibilities is to "manage the roster". Maybe he's the one to blame for the screw up with Asa's redshirt.

That’s the story and I’m sticking to it.

I'm VERY interested to see what AU does here. Greene said earlier that he wants to take some stuff off Gus's plate so I wouldn't be surprised if Suddes replacement is a Greene guy. Also wouldn't be surprised if that role was split into a few different people. The behind the scenes part of CFB fascinates me. There's so much that goes into running the program that you don't hear about. I just know that Suddes was well respected and a big part of the big picture recruiting gameplan

There is zero reason for concern...things are shaping up nicely for 2019 to be a title year where a crap ton of momentum will be gained only to see it wasted in 2020, 2021 and 2022 before Gus is finally dismissed. #Auburnway

Embrace the ride!!!

Right there with you. I didn't grow up with football in my bottle. The business side of it is what got me following it to begin with

So he is in charge of our shitshow of a roster? I'm glad he is leaving.

So he is the guy who botched the Asa Martin situation? Seems like he won't be missed too much.

How do you get one of these jobs? You have to work for free an an intern first? I wonder if UAB needs an intern?

He's from Atlanta. Went to the same HS I went to. (years and years and years separated.) The ability to come back to Atlanta I am sure played into it for his family.
