Not sure if there's a large enough sample size here, but I'm wondering if anyone else feels like they're getting fricked up the butt by Spire.

My gas bill is $401. I called Spire to inquire about my desire to acquire a lower bill. They gave me an excuse about how cold it's been this winter and then directed me to their "payment plan" for people who can't afford their bill.

I decided to look at my budget history for the past five years, which includes the brutally cold January of 2014. My gas bill was never higher than $175 for this cycle. Not once.

Now with Spire taking over, my bill is ~$225 higher?

frick them. Anyone else feeling the heat?

Mine is usually less than $100 now with spire it was like $291! The only gas that I have in my house is to heat the water. No gas stove or anything else. Yea something is off with that.

What is there a way for you to compare the cost per usage on your bills?

Mine was $250 last month. Month before it was $90. Month before $60. September was $4.

I totally feel like spire is jacking something around.

I only have the numbers I entered into my monthly budget file.

Here's an interesting chart that shows average gas prices per cubic feet. Its latest month is November 2017. I'll be interested to see what January 2018's number is.

January has had the lowest average monthly price for natural gas in the past four years. So if they aren't price gouging us with a significantly higher rate than usual, then we all are somehow together using double the amount of gas we normally use. I understand it's been cold, but the fact that they would make that claim is laughable.

I’m gonna go by there office and see if they can show me exactly why it cost more. I got the same “it was cold” answer.

Not in Alabama, but as someone else said see if you can check the cost per therm and then see the amount of usage for the last few months.

Also, law of supply and demand will play a factor. It has been cold, not only in the south, but all across the country so there has been a higher demand/usage for everyone. In the northeast they use fuel oil more than natural gas, which I think has played into the rise in oil/price of gas at the pump.

I know I'm naive on this, but it seems ridiculous that a public utility that I have no choice but to use can just suddenly double my rate without notice. At what point would it be considered price gouging? At what point does swiping money from citizen customers to maintain profits become a legal issue?

Suzanne Sitherwood - the president and CEO of Spire Energy - made over $3 million in 2016.

I don't think I would care anywhere near as much about her salary or about what Spire Energy does with their rates if I knew ahead of time what was going to happen. My rate is one thing one month and then suddenly they're raising it, and I'm only informed by the huge bill that shows up. That I have to pay or risk losing service and get a knock on my credit score. And if I inquire about it, I just get a disrespectful "it was cold this month" reply as have many others who have tried to figure out why their bill is so high so suddenly.

frick em and feed em fish heads.

Depending on state regulation, the short answer is they can't do it arbitrarily to make more money. The profit margin for a company like Spire's public utilities are regulated. More simply put, Spire can't bump up your rate just because they want to pad their profits.

Unfortunately, no one can predict natural gas pricing. If they could, they'd be on Wall St becoming the richest person in the world trading ng futures. They definitely wouldn't be working at Spire

That is consistent with the median salary of S&P 600 companies

Btw, for the conversation, my electric bill (no gas) easily was at a record high for last month. My electricity rates are fixed, so it just was energy usage

Something is weird. I have Gas South here in Georgia. House is two floors, about 2800 sq ft. Gas bill is around $40 in the summer and around $150 in the winter. I have had one bill over $200 in the past 5 years or so.

My first thought about all this was, "well, it's been cold, and the gas rate has gone up some". Then my $514 gas bill came. Never seen it above about $300, and that was during the Polar Vortex of a couple years ago. Going to have to find some Alagasco bills from a few months ago before Spire took over, and divide the bill by the CCF usage, see how the rate has changed...

I live in a somewhat remote area. No natural gas or public water available. My propane tank was filled in the summer. I buried a large one that only needs a refill once or twice a year. My stove, oven, fireplace logs, one hot water heater and main floor heat run on propane. The upstairs and basement are heated with electricity. My electric power bill was up 75 bucks over last year. Don't really monitor the propane because my supplier is a customer and I just pay his bill no matter what......hope he pays mine and we are all good.

My folks and I worked to fill orders for up to 75 loads of diesel per day to power plants here in the Carolinas during the cold spell. Natural gas was cut off for the plants. No one asked me for the price of the diesel I could find.....they just needed juice. Their costs of production were definitely higher.

Jesus, dudes

In in Denver and my electric + gas is never more than $100 combined. I think my square footage is right around 2000 with an outdoor fireplace and gas grill.
