Official Are We Getting A New Special Teams Coach Thread

From peaking in 2013 Iron bowl and valleying in the NC to cost us the game, special teams have usually been steady under Gus.
However, this year when Scott Fountain left special teams fell off a cliff. From the outside looking in the Larry Porter hire looks useless as he has not produced as a recruiter and on the field product took a hit
That being said, do you think we get a new ST coach?

You could see the ST issues with this team early on. It was the biggest weakness on the team. I am in favor of whatever will get it fixed.
Do we have anyone that can return a punt?

Yep, my sources say this guy is on his way to the plains.

Absolutely agree this has to be a focus this season. The fact we get nothing out of the return game with the amount of athletes we have is insane & our coverage was god awful. Also I don't think I remember a year having 3 FGs blocked
I have absolutely no idea who that person is but have to think it will be a priority this offseason. We are already making it a priority in recruiting going after that Australian footballer
FWIW I do think being a bit harsh on Porter. As recruiting coordinator he does a lot of the behind scenes work of coordinating everything and AU is on pace for one of their stronger classes. But his on field results weren't great

Can we hire Fountain back? I know he is in Athens, but I think he is just an analyst. With the 10th coaching position, I wonder if we can entice him back with real coach $$$.

I think part of the reasons why ST was so bad is actually due to a lack of opportunity.
Carlson almost always kicks it through the end zone. Punts have been an issue the past two years, but before that, Steven Clark allowed like 5 punt returns in 4 seasons.
Not to take away from it being a shitshow. I just wonder how that plays into the poor play

You guys do know that Porter isn't our special teams coach don't you? Horton is our RB coach and our (not so) special teams coach.
Which I don't get. Porter is our recruiting coordinator and TE coach. We absolutely don't use our TEs, so Porter is essentially just our recruiting coordinator and counts as an on the field coach because he coaches TEs.
I adore Horton as a RB coach. But as a special teams coach... he isn't that special.
If we can hire another on the field assistant, hire someone who excels as a special teams coach, if not, let Porter try coaching them since as TE coach, he has very little coaching duties to worry about. Horton stays busy with our RBs. And Porter has been an excellent special teams coach in the past. He was at UNC before coming to Auburn. His special teams were some of the best in the nation...both returns and defensively.

I can't believe no one has mentioned kick coverage. It was inevitable in almost every game that we would allow a big return. The play calling in the 2nd half of the LSU was awful, but it was a kick return that broke our backs in that game. I don't think it's an issue with team speed so it almost has to be scheme and coaching. It was so bad, I was calling for using our starters to cover kicks. This has to get fixed. Without Carlson, it could get even worse.

I thought did a good job as a PR. Nothing flashy, but steady.

I thought Roberts did good as a PR -- rarely had a drop. Remember a couple of years ago when we couldn't even catch them??
Roberts has the guts to stand there and catch it -- JF3...not so much when asked to try

Roberts caught the ball. Well, he did half the job. It is a field position game and with a fair catch 80% of the time, and a return of less than 2 yards the rest of the time, you are just giving up the field position battle to the other team. I liked Roberts on defense, but just because he could fair catch the ball did not mean he was a good PR. He was not at all.
It is punt returner, not punt catcher.

Well, that could be the decision of the ST coach. So let's get back to that part and maybe Roberts can return too.

I will give you that. It could have been that Roberts just needed the coaching.
