His salary was $650,000. But to get him to leave we will pay him 1.5 per year for three years. WTF?

The terms also forbid Leath from disparaging the university or disclosing information the university considers confidential.

“Auburn and Dr. Leath together agreed to part ways. The board is grateful to Dr. Leath for his dedication to Auburn and wishes him and Mrs. Leath all the best,” said Brian Keeter, Auburn’s executive director of public affairs, when asked Saturday for a comment.

The agreement, which the Opelika-Auburn News obtained after filing a Freedom of Information request, is signed by Auburn’s trustee president pro tempore Wayne Smith.

In June 2017, Leath signed a five-year contract with Auburn offering him $625,000 per year in salary.

Here's the article showing the contract the BOT and Leath agreed to as a settlement. LINK

Interesting contract, the BOT and LEath signed to get him out and confusing.

I would really like to know, what his TOTAL compensation was yearly in his current contract? Evidently, he had more money coming to him than base salary.

In the contract, it states he must give up his IT devices, but those in the attachment. Well, the attachment includes 2 cell phones, 2 pcs, and a printer that he can keep. So what the heck did he have to turn in? Nothing else, I could see.

And someone must have the inside scoop as to why they felt compelled to pay double what he would have received over the final years of his existing contract.

When Leath and Auburn mutually parted ways in June, his annual pay was increased from $625,000 to $1.5 million for three years. He received the first installment on July 1 and will do so again each of the next two years on July 1. If he had stayed as president, Leath would have received $1.88 million over the same three-year period.
based on this, he was about to get a raise to $1.88 million per year for 3 years. WTF did he do to deserve a $1.2 million raise? Who is writing these shittastic contracts?

exactly. IF he had stayed he would have gotten about 1.9m total for the rest of his contract, 3 years.

the BOT cut him lose and over doubled his annual salary with 1.5m a year for 3 years as a termination agreement.

I just want to know why they did that? They should have to explain it to the Alumni and fans I feel, as we too are representatives of the University.

yeah, you’re probably right. There’s really no way to explain this other than hush money...and we’ll never know what’s being kept quiet (which is probably for the best)

In a twisted way, doing this makes sense as as the least bad way out of a very bad situation.

Perhaps his relationship with the Board of Trustees and perhaps other senior level people at the university had gotten very bad, maybe to the point that they were not even on speaking terms. At this point, it's not that it's a non-productive relationship; it's anti-productive (frankly, with so many stakeholders, it's easy to imagine at Auburn). At this point, you'd have to acknowledge that he was a bad hire from the start...paying him off is not the mistake; hiring him was (clear indications from his tenure at ISU that he's a prima donna so this is still a very bad look for AU). So how does the university ensure that (1) he'll assist with any transitional issues that arise and (2) will not disparage the university? Pay him a lucrative buy-out. When AU calls with a question, he cannot afford not to pick up the phone nor can he afford to speak ill of the school. In either case, he loses a really big chunk of cash.
