I wanted Petrino pretty badly. Thankful as hell we didn't hire him now.

And the offense we have run this year is pretty different than what we ran in 09-11

Not really. We run more read option and pass less but that's the only difference I see. Still the same plays just different emphasis.

More read option and less pass is a pretty damn big difference.

I just checked my post history to make sure but I was strongly against hiring Smart. I was against Gus too but it wasn't because I didn't think he was a good coach. I thought we needed a complete overhaul and didn't think Gus had been gone long enough to pull it off.

Difference of opinion then I guess. Still the same offense to me.

This thread happened when I was on a self imposed hiatus from secr. Glad I'm not in it either.

I wanted to give Petrino a 2nd chance.

Gus was my 2nd choice.

It is similar to 2010 but in 2009 and 2011 we relied heavily on the pump fake and dives and sweeps with no read option w/ many bubble screens. Yes the same formations that we use today were used then but it was a different style of football.

Even in 2010 we didn't see 4 wrinkles on one play. Some of that may have to do with Cam at QB didn't require many wrinkles and we could beat teams straight up.

It's a different style of play which Malzahn has created from the formations he was using then. That's what I see when I compare it to game film from his stint as OC

I am extremely surprised that I didn't come across like a complete goon in this thread I made relatively well thought out statements. I know I had bad gus bus comments though when we hired him. I think I amde an entire page of frick

Yeah. It's different plays out of similar formations and packages. We just run more read and option plays because Nick runs them better and cannot throw very well. It's more of a testament to Gus's willingness to mold the offense around what he has than to fit everything into a confined system. The base packages seem to all look the same as the ones from 2009-2011, though.

I like how I tried to stir it up with this failed attempt... Otherwise I made no comment to be ashamed of...This time anyways.

Gus hadn't shown success against Alabama outside 2010

Bama had to make a last minute drive to beat Auburn in 2009.

Chizik didn't screw with Gus's play calling and scheme until 2011, and we know the outcome of that.

You're exactly correct. Same packages but different plays and molded to fit the QB. Genius.

you're right 2009 was a pretty good shot at Bama from Malzahn. But it still wasn't enough which was my point. 3 touchdowns wasn't going to win us that game. We received a gift from Roof's D playing their best overall game of the year
