I think I'm holding strong, but this season has damaged me. I can't comprehend a frick up in this situation. I just want Auburn football to be awesome again, bottom line. It's as close to a guarantee as you can get with Petrino. With Smart? I'm not so sure.

I look like that, just with wider eyes and a hair yellower

I don't think Smart is a bad hire. It's hard to explain, though. Here are my categories:

Best hire:
Petrino

Good Hire:
Patterson
Peterson
Fisher

Not a bad hire:
Smart
Strong
Franklin
Gundy

Bad Hire:
Gusbus
Taggart
Gruden
etc

Can you be on the search committee? I like the way you think

If we are not getting Petrino and with the options we are left with, I guess Smart is the next best thing. As has been pointed out, my worries lie with recruiting schemes that both UGA and Bama run on D, unproven as a HC, who would our OC be and how much control would the AD have on him.

It's underwhelming when considering the speculated pool. But compared to Chizik?

That is like comparing "Oh you totaled your brand new car and broke some limbs" to "Oh you had a 15 car pileup with a few deaths on a highway"

Just because one is way worse than the other doesn't make the first one okay or not bad

I think you're stretching it. Regardless, I think your premise is wrong. Aside from Petrino, the other coaches are unknown quantities. You can add in their W/L records in other conferences and as head coaches or assistants but it doesn't make any difference. The truth is that we really don't know.

The one thing I know I want from a coach after the Chizik era is a guy that can come in and install structure, discipline, and work ethic. Outside of Petrino, Patterson, and Smart I don't think you're going to get all three.

Just my thoughts. I still believe Petrino is the most likely option. But that's my opinion that is not based on insider information, a BoT member, my dad, or anyone's wife

I still don't get why Gus would be a bad hire. I guarantee he takes a major program to a NC within the next 10 years. He was the only coach on our team. He's a football nut and will work as hard as anyone in the business. He's literally won EVERYWHERE that he's coached at. I still think that Chiz handcuffed him in '11..that was not his offense out there. He plays to the strengths of his players and adjusts accordingly. I still haven't hopped off the Gus bus and he is my #2 behind petrino. The man is a offensive genius. And I really think he would stay out of the defense and just let the coordinator do his job, because he'd be so focused on the offense.

He put Chris fricking Todd in the auburn record books until cam came along. What else do you need to know

The HUNH spread is being slowed down by elite defenses.. you're starting to see it more and more all over college football. Oregon this year is a prime example. They run into a solid Stanford D and they lose. There is a reason that the likes of Saban, Miles, Richt, etc. don't dabble in that type of offense. They stick to their guns because that is what is successful in this league. Florida and Muschamp have taken note.

Malzahn also has questions about disciplinary methods. The stats his offenses put up are incredible and sometimes mind-boggling. But when it comes down to it, I don't trust his offensive prowess against the likes of an LSU, Bama, UF, UGA defense. Not a single bit.

I just hope we can all seriously get behind whoever we hire.
Petrino I'm afraid is gonna divide our fan base and may be another Tub situation- powers that be waiting for the first wrong move so he can get blasted.
Gus to me is a JJ hire bc of his strong faith which should not be a factor nor should JJ at this point . Didn't like him being so open to taking stoner Dyer at Ark St when he was kicked off Gus former team. AU needs more discipline, more wind sprints and let them worship on their own.
Smart is a young tough energetic coach who will be successful. Coach Dye screwed him some by openly supporting him so if he's hired it's a collective groan here we go again. Let's face it though, there is not a Jim Harbaugh or Saban out there.
