I don't want to see Gatewood start, but...

I DO want want to see him play. No doubt his packages would help our 3rd and short and redzone woes. Does anyone know why he didn't play at all? Did I miss something about him being in the doghouse?

Justin Ferguson @JFergusonAU Auburn HC Gus Malzahn said he didn't consider putting QB Joey Gatewood in as an every-down quarterback, but looking back, there were a few opportunities where he probably should have put the Gatewood package into the game.
Gus agrees with you. Of course too little too late.

Maybe it’s because he just doesn’t look like he’d give us an advantage in games. Folks who think coaches intentionally play the lesser talented QB for some reason are a strange bunch.
Those who think Gus is playing the lesser talented QB, what’s Gus’s angle?
A-hate Gatewood
B–hate winning
C-enjoy second guesses
D-building consensus
E-other

$49 million people... that’s what we are dishing out for that CGM brilliance

I don’t think he has an angle. I also don’t believe you can always tell the better player from just practice. Some guys perform better in game situations. I’d like to see Gatewood given an opportunity to run the offense in some capacity during a game.

Thanks for the honest reply.

You talk the same shite non stop. You’re a sad sad little child. I don’t like Gus or the situation we are in but bitching won’t change it.

E-he’s a buffoon that believes the Nix name will buy him more time

Yup. Gatewood is a 3rd and short package. Gus called a poor game.
Reminded me of 2015 and 2106 uga games. Gus panicked

So he’d rather bet his future and his job/millions of $ on a name of a kid and bench the more talented QB?
Man, I wonder what the world looks like thru your eyes? That’d be entertainment!

He gets those millions of dollars whether he coaches another game or not. What has Gus done that gives you so much faith in him? He has a pretty long track record of making wrong decisions.

I get the feeling Gus doesn't fully trust Joey's arm. If you put in Joey, UF just loads the box. It will work against some teams. I am not sure it will work against a team that dominated our OL like today. He may have helped us on those short yardage situations. If it didn't work, people would be bitching about swapping QB's.

Not only was Nix not making the right reads, but even when he did, he was missing the throws. He was beyond awful today. There’s really no other way to describe it.

Do you think teams won’t load the box against Nix? He’s not a good passer. He’s not going to make people pay for stacking the box either.

Would Gatewood throw 3 ints? Maybe, maybe not but at some point, you've got to try something else, because what you are doing is clearly not working!
Gus Malzahn might be the most stuborn coach to ever field a team. How many times did he trot out Jeremy Johnson, while the whole, sane, sight-having, world could see that Johnson was mentally spent?

He’s not a good passer.
The previous three games he was a 70% passer. He threw for over 300 yards last game going 16-21, with two drops. That is damn good. He had a horrible game today. He is young. Give the kid a chance to assimilate. You are the epitome of the ignorant Auburn fan that goes stupid over a loss.

we were 5-0 playing the statistically toughest schedule in the nation to date. tRant said the Auburn fanbase would go moronic the first time Auburn lost this year. They were right.

Except he hasn’t looked good in any big game this year. Tell me his stats vs Oregon, Texas A&M, and this game. So you can say it’s for just one loss, but it’s the whole body of work. It’s time to give Gatewood a chance. He may suck too, and I’ll eat my crow if he does. But at least Gus will be trying to get better, instead of being the same old stubborn HC.

The kid is a true freshman. You are ready to throw in the towel on him after six fricking starts?
No, you will bitch about Gus losing games if it doesn't work out.

I’m not really even talking about today specifically. I made basically the same post at the end of the game thread. Gus doesn’t give backups any meaningful snaps to try to learn about how they react in game situations. It’s a flaw of his that he needs to correct.
