Recruiting in college basketball in the vast majority of situations goes through the AAU coach. AAU coaches recieve their compensation from their shoe sponsors. The shoe companies pressure those coaches and players to sign with schools that use their products. The lions share of the top high school talent play for a Nike affiliated AAU team. 90% of the time a kid that played for an Nike AAU team will choose a Nike school if they have that option. To make matters worse all of Barbee's recruiting contacts pre Auburn were with Nike AAU teams/coaches which made his job that much more difficult considering the historical nature of our program sucking.
