Has Gus ever actually developed a quarterback?

he is certainly capable of utilizing the talents of athletically gifts talents like Cam and Nick, but look at his entire track record. A guy like Stidham had serious arm talent, but it's pretty obvious he was never coached by anyone to step up in the pocket, which is the basics of playing qb. The qb play at AU since Tubbs last year has been brutal to say the least outside of 2 or 3 years. Gus has been there all but 1 year since then

Are you saying QB play under Tubs was stellar?

Todd, Cam, Marshall, at least one year of stidham. outside of those years you have '11 '15 '16 and this past season

Yep he developed Nick into more of a QB in 2014. I’d still take 2013 Nick all day.

To be fair the QB play is brutal at most schools. Gus should get the credit for Nick becoming more complete under him. Sean White was better even if good for him had a ceiling in the SEC too low.
Stidham had the same issues last year as this year, but KJ wasn't taking the heat off of him. It's hard to articulate, but IMO the game simply moves to fast for Stidham and he struggles because of it. When KJ was rolling last season the game slowed down as DC's focused on KJ and Stidham's talent took over. Stidham used an outside QB coach, etc...he didn't have the best line but his line was good enough that many QB's would have had more production than Stidham this season in our O. There are probably 10 QB's that would have certainly beat LSU and UTk maybe even MSU with our O issues this season.

Congrats on posting a question about an issue that has perhaps been discussed more than any other issue ever discussed on AU message boards.

That was the last time we were actually able to develop high school quarterbacks

Mitchell Mustain while in Arkansas. Who had a pretty good freshman year till Houston Nutt benched him and sent Gus packing
(etc: packing not -backing.)

Cam improved over the year
Nick drastically improved over his two years.

Exactly. You have to go all the way back Brandon Cox to find an AU qb that signed with us out of highschool and developed into a multi year starter whose eligibility ended when he graduated. We haven’t developed qb’s from within the system who stayed with the system in nearly a decade.

We’ve had what 4 non hs qbs since then? That’s what 3 hs qbs we were supposed to hit on?

I think the transformation of Jason Campbell from 2003 to 2004 was one of the most impressive I've ever seen.

We could have had better QB play under Tubs had he recruited better at the QB position but it wasn’t like Tommy was putting guys in the league every few years.

Big Al Borges and the Gulf Coast Offense made JC a lot of money in the NFL.
Hugh Nall would have never got him there...

All TRANSFERS!!!

Tubs didnt really develop anyone. We had Campbell and the rest just fared well because their supporting cast did so great. Tubs had a juco in there as well, but at QB play, Tubs had nothing. It was a stout D, strong run game and a QB to throw it on occasion. How many QBs did Tubs get into the league or drafted? 1?
Gus simply does not have a complete team or close to it in comparison to Tubs.

What does that have to do with just general QB playing ability?
This whole needing to get a kid directly from HS is such a trivial thing to hang on and a bit comical, but hey run with it. A good QB gets us to the NC just the same.

These transfers also got us a NC, to a NC game and one game from the playoffs. How did Tubs do or any of our previous coaches in their endeavors with HS qb's?
I am not in the Gus bandwagon either here, but he has shown he can work well with a good QB and great supporting cast.

Not what he could do with a good one. Rather is there any indication that Gus might possess that skill set?
