AL. Com shows an article with a quote from Lionel that he went to Auburn and pulls for AU. He isn't an alum though. The Commodores were founded in Tuskegee and Lionel grew up in Tuskegee so didn't think he went to AU

Several websites list him as being affiliated with Auburn for some reason. One says something about a graduate degree.

My ex in-laws are the same age, both attended Auburn and never knew anything about him being there.

First I've ever heard he attended Auburn. He went to Tuskegee and dropped out after his sophomore year.

Looking on Google and several sites are saying he went to grad school at AU after graduating from Tuskeegee - but I thought he left TU after his sophomore year.
I did find an interview with him on a website called theboot.com discussing his album "Tuskeegee" where he says he went to Auburn. So, I dunno.
