Top 10 recruit Greg Brown schedules three official visits

Top 10 recruit Greg Brown has his school list at a working number of five. The next step for the Austin (Tex.) Vandegrift standout is to examine the schools involved, figure out their roster make ups and take visits.

“We are just waiting and seeing what other people are going to do and allowing Greg to get a feel for these coaches and these staffs,” Greg Brown Sr told 247Sports.

“We are going to maybe take a few more unofficials before we take officials and maybe after we take officials, just so Greg can get a rapport with the school, the coaches and the players and see where everything is at. We definitely want to see what guards they have returning or incoming.”

The elder Brown informed 247Sports of three visit dates already on the docket. The first official is to Texas the weekend of Sept. 7 for their football match up against LSU. He’s also scheduled visits for Auburn and Memphis.

“We have Auburn the November 30th weekend and Memphis January 4th for the Memphis/Georgia game,” he said. “We wanted to see Anthony Edwards play against Memphis.”

To go with those three schools, Kentucky and North Carolina are also on Brown’s list. Brown Sr. said they are looking to schedule visits for both during the college basketball season.

“We haven’t set up the Kentucky one yet and we haven’t set up North Carolina, but North Carolina we will try to do those one of their big games,” he explained. “We’ve gone to the Duke game, so I would probably want to see them play Virginia at home if that happens or another game. Then kind of pick and choose a Kentucky game and what sets up to be a big match up.”

Based on the visit schedule it’s easy to see that Brown isn’t in a hurry to make a college choice, and his father reiterated that notion.

“We are going to take our time,” Brown said. “In my opinion, I told Greg wherever he decides to go we aren’t doing a transfer. Once you make your decision, it’s your decision and me and the people that help me help him will all give him our best opinion but at the end of the it’s his decision.”

A five-star recruit, Brown ranks No. 7 overall and as the No. 1 power forward in the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

He'll get to experience the IB which should be a good look for us.

May need to pull for Georgia to whip Memphis since that’s a specific matchup he said he wants to see.

Pearl has full roster for first time at Auburn

quote:

AUBURN | For a good portion of Bruce Pearl’s first five seasons at Auburn, he’s had to piece together a roster, bringing in graduate transfers and always being short of having a full roster of scholarship players.
That will change in year six.

With signees Babatunde Akingbola and Devan Cambridge enrolling this week, Pearl will have a full 13 scholarship player available to him when the Tigers open the season Nov. 5 against Georgia Southern.

“I have five seniors and eight newcomers. I’ve never had a roster like that,” Pearl said. “I have five returning players, all seniors, and eight newcomers because Jamal Johnson is a newcomer. He sat out last year.”

Johnson transferred from Memphis a year ago. Pearl’s big 2019 signing class included six freshmen and one junior college transfer, Javon Franklin, who is still rehabbing from leg surgery.

The true freshmen include Akingbola, Cambridge, Isaac Okoro, Jaylin Williams, Tyrell Jones and Allen Flanigan. Jones, who sat out this summer returning from a stress fracture, is cleared to begin team workouts this week.

Akingbola is a center, Williams a stretch-four, Cambridge, Okoro and Flanigan wings, and Jones a combo guard.

“Some guys that came here to play may not play right away, which is now the first time you really develop a program because now I’ve got a chance to redshirt a guy or even two and develop them,” Pearl said.

“Redshirting is like investing. It’s not a negative thing. You know it in football and when it comes to really great basketball programs, that’s what we do. I’ve never had the luxury of being able to but now we can, which really speaks to player development.”

One of the freshmen that won’t redshirting, assuming he remains healthy, is Okoro, who was a standout during team workouts this summer.

“Of the newcomers, Isaac Okoro will clearly standout physically being able to make the fastest adjustment to the college game,” Pearl said. “I’ve already said I that I think he’s a dominating defensive player, a dominating physical player and a winner. He’s a tough kid.

“Beyond that, a lot is going to depend on how it all shakes out as far as who is going to be out there and how much.

This fall, we’ve got to let those guys answer those questions. I shouldn’t go in with too much preconceived notions because there’s going to be so much competition.”

Jones, who is expected to backup senior J’Von McCormick at point guard, is also slated to play an important role this season. The rest will all have an opportunity to earn a spot in the playing rotation this fall.

“All these freshmen, it’s not where you start, it’s where you finish,” Pearl said. “What do they do, how do they grow and how do they develop. We’re going to need some of them this year to have some impact. We’re going to need all of them next year when we lose those five seniors — all of them.

“That’s a big part of this year for these freshmen. I need some of them to step in and I need all of them to be ready for next year.”

Team workouts began this week. Full preseason practices begin Sept. 24.

Nothing earth shattering was shared by Bruce on Tigertalk, but sharing anyway. It’s kinda nice having 13 scholarship guys.

Couple of things Bruce Pearl mentioned on Tiger Talk tonight: With 13 guys, he may redshirt 1 or 2 of them, Danjel Purifoy had the best offseason of anyone, and that Samir Doughty is going to be 1 of Auburn's best players. Just a few things to be excited about with 75 days to go!

Cambridge seems like the most obvious redshirt candidate. Flanigan only other player we could afford to redshirt I would think.

Nah Cambridge will definitely play. Fills a need imo.

I won’t share many of them but here is another basketball short video on twitter:

Bruce’s speeches are so freaking great.

What need? I'm excited about him but he probably is 13th on the list right now as far as who is ready to contribute, other than maybe Stretch, but we have to play him imo. Wiley/Mclemore will need help at the 5 due to foul trouble at times I'm sure.

He’s got length and versatility to play the Dunbar role. I assume he was the backup plan to the guy that committed to Memphis.

I agree, his speeches are incredible, but in the tweeted video, I think that was the S&C coach talking. It didn't sound like Bruce.

The tone was a little subdued for Bruce’s normal, but he’s dramatic,so I didn’t know.

Actually the juco Javon Franklin is the most likely since he is coming off a serious leg injury. With reports of Danjel playing the 4 a lot this season I don't think Cambridge playing the 3 gets RSed.

I had heard he was fully cleared at this point but maybe right if he needs more time. I just see the 2 spot as Doughty/Johnson and the 3 as Okoro/Franklin and then whoever is more ready between Flanigan and Cambridge fills in behind them. But if Franklin needs more time we could afford it for him.

Ok...I give up. I just went to the official Auburn tigers website to look over the new basketball roster and it still has not been updated since last year.

Why can't this athletic dept keep up w the basic information that fans and even students use for updated sports rosters?

School has started, right? So the players are enrolled officially, so why would they not be proactive and at least update all the sports roster pages? Geez....

It takes time to take new roster photos, update player bios and add new ones, update measurables, etc. It's probably one or two people who are responsible for doing this for each sport (and they probably have more responsibilities too), and I imagine their priorities go to sports that start sooner than basketball (S&D, soccer, volleyball, football). It'll get done in the next month before practices start I would imagine.

He's already used his RS. I think the top 3 with the most likelihood of RS'ing are Williams, Cambridge and Akingbola.

Okoro and Flanigan will play the 3 and Purifoy and Franklin the 4.
