To be fair...assuming Gus will make a bad decision on a key position preseason isn't exactly a radical assumption.

Shivers is not the #1. It will be one of the bigger backs, and if DJ or Joiner can't rise up, I am expecting Tank rolling into the top spot. Shivers is tough and fast, but his size does not match his heart, and although it translated well in HS, it does not for college to be the every down back, or starting back at his size 5'7" 180 lbs and 5'7" is being nice

btw, for the Hellaire name drop, he is about 205-210. Significant difference

Oh and if he proves me wrong, I am good with that.

A week ago, you guys were posting about how great our depth was. Best ever. Now Shivers is the #1 back.

That is bad. Very bad. I don’t think he is the #1 back and won’t be. He is and always has been a gimmick back. If DJ does not step up and play much better than he did last year, one of the other guys will take that #1 position.

These type of posts are absurd. Who are you? Do you attend any practices? Are you a coach who's job is on the line?

Coaches get fired if they don't produce, so if Shivers is the guy I'll go with that because I know better than to speculate in absurdities like yours.

Its not absurd. We have seen it twice before under Gus.

Shivers will be starter in name only. If we run 80 snaps in a game expect no more then 20 snaps for Shivers. He's done everything the coaches have asked him. Tank is not ready to be the starter yet. By midseason or around game 4 is my guess that he takes over the lead back spot. But he need SEC game reps under his belt before turning it over to him. It's been very quiet on DJ so he's either doing very well or doing very bad. Take that for however you want.

But if you think Shivers is the man because he's the "starter" you're mistaken. Like I said think 10-12 "touches" per game. Last year in the off season everyone was begging for that. So make your damn minds up what you want.

Shivers obviously has the ability to get better just like the rest of em. I’ll maintain wait and see. Shivers is fast (the fastest RB that we have) and I read he caught a pass and ran it 80 yards for a TD against our defense in practice. We may just use him differently. I think Tank will eventually be our guy and has the most upside. He can be our bell cow if needed.

I’ve read a lot of good things about Mark Antony Richards as well.. DJ had his best day against LSU and is a great north and south runner. We really do have a lot of good depth

For those wondering: Mark Murphy and Bryan Matthews both have articles saying he leads the pack. Phillip Marshall has a feature article on him as well. We can maintain that nobody knows anything but we are for sure being led to believe Shivers is front running.

Fair point. We had 5 listed starters recently

Well we have seen Shivers for two years now. Though he has some uses, it has not looked like he could possibly be our #1 back unless he made some serious strides.

So why dont we wait and see how it works out. My guess it the he is being named the starter due to his dedication. But if you know anything about the system Gus runs, you will know that he needs ONE back that can take a pounding and make yards consistently in the middle of the field. From what little I know, that is not typically a 5-2" speedster that weights 165 pounds.

I think after he ran Kerryon in the ground, he shifted from that philosophy. It seems he wants to find a few that he can spread the load out.

I will believe it when I see it. I think he wanted Boobie to be the work horse last year. He just didnt step up.

He may not be able to do that now since we dont have anyone that has the experience to do so yet. Maybe DJ will step up but he didnt look like The Guy last year. Joiner looked promising if he can get a better grip on the ball and I have not seen Mar run so I dont know about him.

Its amazing that every year, we seem to have this conversation. Its one of Gus's biggest failures to me. Inability to get a real blue chip running back that fits the system. Been saying it for years and for the most part, its been true. Kerryon was a surprise but since Mason, we have had what we need in the back field.

Gus hasn’t produced anything but a few miraculous victories ... just enough to keep his job.... which imo doesn’t justify the expense or the needed trajectory of the program. We are sitting in neutral and have been passed by UGA, LSU, UF, and soon UT.... UA is in decline but still in better shape than we are.

Maybe I'm not taking the tone correctly but...

Didn't Pettway lead the conference in rushing in 2016?
Wasn't KJ the SEC POY in 2017?

I don't think rushing attack or players in the backfield have been a failure at all. Kerryon was top 50 player, wasn't he? Tank... Armoni... Roc Thomas

Yeah, Missouri’s 2013 team certainly had a nasty pass rush, but was also charmin soft against the run. I wonder which defense he would choose?
IIRC, they were #2 against the rush before playing Auburn. Then they trotted out that 3-3-5 defense and got gashed...
