The only "fine" dining we had back then was Amsterdam. Botchers was in business when I was there. Not sure if it's still around. Oh, and Supper Club. There was always a bar behind where Skybar is now. Seems it closed every year and reopened as something else. The night life back then consisted of frat parties or going to someone's apartment. Opelika might has well have been a cow pasture. There was NOTHING out there.

Word to the wise - Amsterdam has severely declined in quality. It’s honestly bad.

And downtown Opelika is getting better every year. In a few years it will probably have an arguably better scene (for adults, that is).

Food

No-brainer downtown food choices:
- Moe's Original BBQ
- The Hound
- Acre
- The Depot
- Little Italy (after a few drinks, obviously)
- Fusion
- Mike and Ed's
- Tacorita/Taco Mama (both are okay)
- Draft House
- Hamilton’s (for Rig’s sake)
- Ariccia

Best food in Auburn (not downtown):
- Pannie George's Kitchen
- Savanh Thai Kitchen
- Taste of Asia
- Fratelli’s
- Sushiya
- Sushi Bistro
- Umami
- La Plaza (by Winn Dixie)

Beer/Cocktails
Downtown choices:
- Avondale (overpriced but decent atmosphere)
- Live Oaks (food is meh so eat first)
- Moe's/1716/Sky (if you want to hang with the youngins)
- Mama G’s (Thach)

Downtown Opelika choices + food:
- Irish Bred Pub (food has markedly improved and they obviously have drinks)
- Resting Pulse (new brewery with very good beer (much better than Red Clay))
- There's a speak easy across the street from Resting Pulse. Won't be hard to find and it's damn cool.
- Red Clay
- John Emerald's Distillery
- Zazu (good food + drinks)
- Ampersand Wine Bar

Very solid list. For those going to taco mama, i'd suggest the burritos over the tacos. Tacos are okay, but burritos are very solid for what you pay for. Also, always do the "build your own" basket. You can put all the same toppings but it is $1 cheaper (looking out for you college kids). My favorite is making the Big Client burrito but using ground beef instead of the barbacoa.

For your not downtown options, back when I was there Naruto was phenomenal. Nobody went because of the name and decorations, but their rice bowls were legit fantastic. Not sure if it is still as good or not, but that use to be one of my favorite spots for some decently priced asian food.

Wasn’t there an Italian place downtown called Denaro’s or something similar?

Oh really? I’ve never given it a chance - guess I should.

Sushiya is the sushi place Auburn has needed for a long time. Both fusion and sushiya have pretty solid poke bowls, too.

Is it bad that I've never heard of any of these? Damn I need to get back to Auburn more.

Not even Pannie George’s?

That was there when we were. Out in the shopping center on S College - fried catfish!

I haven’t been in years, but back when I was in school, it was fantastic. Like $8 for a chicken rice bowl with salad and soup plus all the yum yum sauce.

They’ve got a ton of authentic Korean cuisine as well, some on the menu and some off menu stuff as well

My favorite restaurant around here is Cafe 123 in downtown Opelika. My favorite bbq place is Butcher Paper in Opelika. A little further out but worth the drive is the Waverly Local.

Provino's is now Venditori's. Same menu, location and food. One of my favorites.

Sad to hear Amsterdam’s has slid so badly. Used to like that spot when I was there.

I’ll second Naruto, though. Haven’t been recently, but when it first opened around 2009-2010, nobody went due to decorations (I guess?) but the food was actually really good.

We had dinner and lunch at a place in Florida called "Stinky's Fish Camp". I understand there is one in Auburn now. I have never seen that listed in any of your lists.

It was great in Florida and had some very good grilled fish dinners there.

Has anyone tried it or is it OK in Auburn?

Yep. Decorations scared everyone off. I got to know the owner at the time. He actually didn't really care for the show at all. He did it because he thought that is what college kids were into

I've never been to a Stinky's. I've never heard anything great about it. Never heard anything bad either, just nobody ever saying it is somewhere I have to try. I'll give it a try next time I have the option.

Havent been to the one in Auburn but im a big fan of the "stink juice' they serve in FLA spot. We had a beach house close by one year and would daily ride over to get one.

The one we ate at in Florida was right on the beach in Santa Rosa Beach. Was excellent.

I had a Auburn visor on and the waitress told me they were building one in Auburn.

Grouper was excellent. Blackened
