Lol just made an edit to that post before I saw you commented. As I said on that post, the numbers is the WR room are starting to get a little thin.. not really a problem this year, but next year it could be an issue.

It hasn’t been brought up much and I don’t think it’s official but some of our writers have mentioned it.

Jimbo has a track record of having great passing attacks

When? When he had Winston? Gus can claim many more QBs to pass for over 3000k then Fisher can by far so don't see your argument at all.

quote:

they are vastly different

How are they different? Only difference is they use a TE more and we use an HB more. They run more back shoulder stuff then we do but the routes are the same. We do it with Seth and Bo some. How does their offense look against real defenses. Not good at all. Even our last game we were horribly on offense and so were they. Yet they still get 5* WRs.

quote:

doesn't this kind of burst your entire argument

No it completely supports everything about my argument. If you have good recruiters it doesn't matter the offense proven by LSU and a host of other schools that run outdated systems or systems that aren't pass happy.

quote:

our WR recruiting has not been bad

Take our WRs and rank them against the other SEC teams in terms of rankings from recruiting. I don't know the official number but I bet it's around 8ish or 9ish in the conference. You can't get your offense going recruiting at that level in this rat race known as the SEC.

And people wonder why we lean on the running game with high 4 and 5 star talent at the running back position.

Uh, Fisher has had 5 3,000 yard passers between FSU and A&M with three 3 different QB's and I would be hard pressed to believe Francois wouldn't have been the 6th if he hadn't gotten injured in the first game of his second season.

Malzahn has had 2 in his years at Auburn and Arky St.
Malzahn has had 4 if we count his time as an OC. So, want to try this argument again?

Wait what? LSU's passing game has been terrible, despite the good recruits. How does that support your argument that good recruits are all that matters?

LSU passing Rankings:
2018 - 60th
2017 - 84th
2016 - 93rd
2015 - 103rd
2014 - 118th
2013 - 54th

So clearly, it isn't the recruits.

ETA: I see your point here. Question though, how many top receiver recruits that LSU has gotten, came outside of Louisiana?

I believe Jones posted a page or so back that our average WR recruiting rating is around 94. I'd be hard pressed to believe that is 8/9 in the coference.

We lean on the running game because Malzahn has always leaned on it. Stop fooling yourself.

I’d guess our average WR recruiting ranking would be 4th or 5th. It would be really difficult to rank by school because a lot of WRs are listed as athletes or move positions. But we’ve only brought in a few 3* guys in the last while at that position

CorchJay’s better point is the lack of elite talent there. Most of our major rivals get a top 5 guy every few years and most have been panning out, to boot

Yea, I’d agree we definitely have not gotten the absolute top end talent as far as 5* go. Though, most other that’s e are talking about have some built in advantages that we do not.

Regardless though, LSU is proof positive that the scheme can make a huge difference in what the talent you have is able to do. They had the same people on the field in 2018 vs 2019. Two different schemes.

I’m a little surprised.

I thought he was going to develop into a real threat at WR.

I wonder if they rethink that with Farrar leaving. I know they probably lined up at different spots, but he would help with depth more on that side to me at this point imo. I know some were high on him as a DB coming out of high school, but I'm not sure he would crack our rotation at DB.

We brought in 3 freshman with the same sort of make-up as Farrar. I’m guessing Capers is the closest to starting in terms of skillset and polish.

The whole WR corps at this time is

SR Stove
JR Williams
JR Schwartz
JR Jackson
rFR Johnson
FR Capers
FR Hudson
FR Evans
FR Canion

9 on scholarship for this season. We’ll lose Stove and Williams. Schwartz could go with a great season.

This incoming class will essentially, at most, replace the number leaving after ‘20. That’s not taking into account Hill switching positions plus McClain, Sheffield, and Farrar off the roster.

What I see here is Morris slimming down the WR position slightly. And my guess is that the TE being on the field most snaps is the answer as to why.

The only issue is, after this year we've kind of put ourselves in a position to where we will have to depend on a lot of young guys. That year will be something like this..

Jackson will be a SR
Johnson will be a rSO
Capers will either be a rFR or SO
Hudson will either be a rFR or SO
Evans will either be a rFR or SO
Canion will either be a rFR or SO
+ 1 or 2 freshman.

Not much room for error.. we basically need all of them to at least become solid WRs. I feel good about them, but realistically at least 1 or 2 won't develop like we hope.

meh...

With two years of practice since last seeing them, there could be a whole different look for some of these, and light years of difference in the offensive game plan.

Recruiting notes from 247/KN

Auburn is in the top group of schools for 4* RB LJ Johnson and 5* DB Jason Marshall.

Auburn is pursuing 4* TE Cane Berrong.

Also, 4* OC James Brockermeyer and his 5* OT brother, Tommy, announce their commitment tomorrow. Probably Bama
