And on Monday, he signed with the Detroit Tigers and (per Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press) received a bonus $7.5 million — a new record for the current draft structure.

Wonder why he left money on the table? Targeted signing bonus for his draft status was @ 8 mil. I need a loan dangit.

It was the second highest in the slot limit era.

That is the max he could get. He probably would have gotten the max if he was a jr..

He is a junior.

I thought he was a senior. I would have thought the leverage he had coming back would have driven the price to the max. It's still a hell of a signing bonus.

Very few first round picks get full slot.

What leverage do you think he had exactly? You think losing a salary year + risking a #1 overall slot over a 7-10% bonus hike is leverage?
You can't do better than #1 overall but you can do a hell of a lot worse.

While true, Detroit could lose the rights to the #1 overall pick if he had come back. Seniors have zero leverage. Juniors have another option than signing on the dotted line.

You do realize they would get the #2 pick the following draft if Mize didn’t sign right? The tigers have the majority of the leverage here. The teams generally sign players to slightly above the value of the following pick because of the leverage tilting towards the teams.

I would imagine they negotiated down the signing bonus to use the other $500k towards another prospect and stay under the slotting cap, but Casey is getting that money baked back in his contract somewhere.

Only an absolute moron would return to school after being drafted #1

You guys really don't understand the MLB draft LOL.

Nothing like having the #1 pick and we Auburn fans find something to complain about

They can't do that, and its not what happened. It would also be highly illegal (see: John Coppolella and his lifetime ban for gaming the system albeit in a different but similar market). Mize simply signed for the most money his leverage dictated, because turning down that offer would be absolutely retarded on about a hundred different levels.

If Mize had not come through Auburn during the Jay Jacobs tenure, he would have gotten 3 million more
Fact

If he didn't sign, he would be a Senior in next year's draft with zero leverage, so how exactly is he benefiting from not signing?
Bringing up Karsten Whitson doesn't even make any sense as he's the perfect example of why you SHOULD sign, especially as a pitcher. He declined $2.1 million, went to school, got hurt, turned out to not be that good anyway, and ultimately signed for $100,000.

It wasn't the #1 pick, but not far behind.....
This kid losing millions by falling from RD1 to RD11 is a great example why only morons don't sign RD1 deals.
Mize's only real leverage is to threaten complete stupidity and making a horrible life decision. Most people don't call that leverage

I never once said he shouldn't sign. I only said juniors have some leverage while seniors have zero.
Mize's leverage would be that Detroit wasted their first round pick this year, if he chose to come back. While the MLB draft is deeper than any other sport, nobody wants to miss out on their first round pick.....especially the #1 pick.
