I'm old enough to remember the Dye years, but not Barfield. I know my mom hated him though.
All I got, lol.

Barfield was always terrible.
Malzahn is mostly terrible but somehow finds lightning every few years.

As I stated earlier, I was there in Jordan-Hare at the 42-0 blowout by UT in 1980 that signaled the end of Barfield era.
Barfield had a reputation as a great offensive coach who was out of his depth as an HC. He had the misfortune of going up against Bryant during his final run at Bama and contributed 5 losses to our 9-game streak. Unlike Gustav, he never won anything of note, and due to probation in his only decent season ('79) he never took us to a bowl. As a result of the UT game (in which we were ranked going in) he was a dead man walking the rest of the year, finishing 0-6 in SEC play. After his dismissal, AU made a serious run at Shug protégé Vince Dooley, fresh off his Herschel-fueled NC at UGa. When Dooley turned us down, we settled for Dye.
One other significant difference between Barfield and Malzahn: Barfield was making about $80,000 a year, and it cost AU nothing to fire him.

I believe that Dooley had actually agreed to come to Auburn but then changed his mind.

Barfield had talent and in my opinion was a top 3 coach in the SEC at the time. He was just the second best coach in the state and his career was sandwiched between two legends.
Barfield rarely lost to less talented teams like we do atleast twice a year now

Bryant, Dooley and Majors were easily the top 3 in the conference. Cholly Mac at LSU, Doug Dickey at UF, Fran Curci at UK, even Emory Bellard at MSU all had more success than Barfield at AU.

So, Gus is Barfield v2.0.

Barfeild's best year had a better winning percentage than what Malzahn had last year.

The schedule was much different back then.
Although only 11 games, there were no cupcakes on the schedule. The easiest game of a season might be Georgia Tech.
So I only look at SEC records and Barfield won at higher % than Malzahn. Of course, he never beat Bama and Bear Bryant.
Joe Cribbs, James Brooks and William Andrews were exciting to watch.
But let’s not get crazy, I’m not saying Barfield was a great coach.
