Apparently, NCAA passed a rule that says if it is fair caught anywhere between goal line and 25 it auto goes to the 25....thoughts?

Rule sucks and renders kickoffs pretty freaking useless

Maybe the punter can tap his helmet twice in order to get a free punt. Some of those flop jobs are dangerous.

Take away the kickoff unless you want to try an onside kick

On kickoffs only? Good rule if only for kickoffs. Terrible rule if punts are included. Completely changes the game.

It is for kickoff only

Need to get rid the kickoff or change how it is done, no reason to increase the level of injury like that just for 99/100 returns to get roughly to the touchba on 25

They should just do away with kickoffs at this rate (which I think they want to do).

Used to be such a big part of the game. I still remember Robert Baker’s return.

There isn’t even a high amount of injuries during kickoffs. The rule won’t affect most teams until crunch time when pinning the team deep and clock management factors in. That is until kickoff coverages start to sleepwalk through so many dead ball returns and then a team does a surprise return.

I'm waiting for the even the first shred of data that says kickoffs are the most dangerous play. I'm all for player safety, I love all the the targeting and leading the the helmet rules, but this is dumb to me. Luckily we get a lot of touchbacks anyway.

Hard to get exact evidence due to the widespread underreporting of concussions and frequent delay in injury reporting

If the NFL and coaches frequently say it is the leading cause of injury and brain trauma though, I'll believe them

Given that concussions are caused by rapid deceleration which causes the brain to smash the sides of the brain cavity, makes sense thattbe play that gives multiple players time to build speed over extented distances before a collision is dangerous

The plays are dangerous at a higher rate, but tbe infrequent kickoff returns makes injuries more infrequent even with higher danger levels

Why couldn’t the NCAA just let the fact that the legs of the college kickers are getting stronger (resulting in infrequent returns) do the work of committees, and let the kickers phase the high frequency of the kickoff returns out of the game.

Just because it seems bad doesn't mean it actually is. They should have hard data before they change rules. I'm a huge MMA fan and in MMA 12 to 6 elbows are banned meaning no elbows that go straight down like 12-6 on a clock, but its only a rule because some dummy saw people breaking blocks of ice with the technique thought it had to super dangerous if you could do that... nevermind the fact that its one of the weaker elbows you can throw. Basically I said all that to say rule changes shouldn't be made on perception because perception can be wrong. If data says it poses a much greater risk then talk about rule changes....and PLEASE stay far from the Greg Schiano proposal.

Yeah this is a dumb rule. They’re just trying to make themselves look like they care, I’m sure they won’t do anything to stop the constant head on head collisions of lineman on every single play

They've reported significantly less concussions and severe injuries since rule changes to reduceKO return s have take. Effect

Ivy league has a bunch of data on it

I'm fine with the targeting rule, but they give a fifteen yard penalty and an ejection. Then they review it and if it's not targeting they reverse the ejection but keep the fifteen yard penalty. That makes zero sense...
