Yes sir. Looks bleak overall now but I believe we have more than the media is letting on. Good qb play would do well to solidify our offense. I doubt the OL would be the Achilles heel this morning.

That’s the point.

He sucks. He was winless as Auburn’s starter last year.

In the case of TJ Finley beating out Zach Calzada, which I don’t think will actually happen, it would mean the staff completely whiffed on the one mission that should’ve been fixed this off-season — the QB position. It’s the most important.

Even Alabama would lose 2-3 games with him at QB. He’s not near good enough to lead a top tier talented offense, much less one like Auburn with glaring issues.

Again, I think Zach Calzada wins the position. I also think we’re wasting our time giving 1st team reps to TJ Finley.

I think Calzada wins the job as well but you're trying to read way to much into 1st team vs 2nd team 2 days into camp.

Too many negatigers. Normal for this board unfortunately.

He’s getting 1st team reps because of familiarity in the system and Zach Calzada’s injury. I know how this works.

If Finley is the starter, I’ll be hunting/fishing all season.

Agreed. Ashford and Calzada should be getting all the 1st team reps. And then Holden. And then if there’s any time left, Finley can have a few snaps.

meh, TJ deserves the chance to let the coaches see if he has progressed. I am sure dude has been working just like all the other players. Wait and see who trots out on the field for the first snap of the season.

TJ hasn’t looked terrible in some of the drills. Not just his passing footwork but just timing and body movements looks better then Calzada. However I think Calzada will be the starter I’m about 10-14 days into the fall.

Sean Jackson is huge and has slimmed down some looks like he has some of his burst back before he started piling on weight to play fullback in high school. I think there will be a true 3 back rotation. Probably split between touches 15-20 for Tank, 10-15 for Hunter. 6-8 for Jackson. I say touches because I think catches out of the backfield is gonna be a big part of the plan especially against zone coverage

Like it or not, he was our starter by the end of last season and, if memory serves, the only QB on the roster with any time on the field in a live game wearing an AU uniform.

I don’t think he’s got the skills to hold onto the #1 spot, but he deserves a few days to disprove that.

If he could improve accuracy / touch and we block he’d be fine. Just don’t have high expectations

Ultimately, the QB has to produce and not make mistakes. Something we really haven't had since Nick Marshall. What I like so far during this off season is there seems to be actual competition. We never had that under Gus. I am excited to see if that alone will make our guys progress.

Jhead of on3 and rivals claims he attended an open portion of Auburn practice. His thoughts:

quote:

1. DL is deep, very deep and a unit that finally resembles what we were accustomed to from the early K. Steele defenses.

2. WR is deeper and more talented than I anticipated. Shed looks great on the hoof and a step faster than last year. Capers is healthy and looks much more confident in making plays with the ball in the air.

3. LB is concerning. OP looks great but who lines up next to him is a massive question mark. Until we put pads on and have a scrimmage or two its going to be hard to say what happens there, but Eugene Assante looked very fluid and athletic in the few video clips I saw.

4. Going to have manufacture depth at Safety. I’ve been told by multiple people I trust that Zion Puckett is ready to take a massive step forward this season. That said, who lines up at Boundary safety between McDonald, Bridges, and Gilbert is far from clear at this early stage. Like LB, that’s not going to get settled out anytime soon but its certainly something to watch as fall camp goes along.

5. Prediction. The OL, if they stay healthy, will be a top half of the SEC unit. Guys definitely look much better physically than years past, and I get the feeling these guys are going to play together as a group very well and will have a much better feel for the offense.

6. Last but not least, Calzada made some absolute money throws yesterday. Now the bullets aren’t live yet and his footwork needs to be cleaned up some, but he has got an absolute NFL arm.

We’ll see how it all shakes out by the end of camp, but those are my day one thoughts.

It’s that time of the year. Hope springs eternal. We will need performance to meet the hype for some players or positions, but overall it seems like I’m reading about a fighting chance kind of football team.

That will be alright. I know where our limitations are and I know where we stack up. Not getting excited about football season is wrong though.
