Auburn recruiting: 5 things I learned on Day 2 of Under Armour All-America Game week (SECCountry)
quote:

1. Markaviest Bryant likes Auburn now more than ever

Mr. Big Cat is always fun to talk to. I’ve tracked his recruitment since the summer, and Auburn always has been a team on the outside looking in. That isn’t the case anymore.

Auburn recruiting-Chandler Wooten-Markaviest Bryant-Anders Carlson-Georgia-Alabama
Auburn target Markaviest Bryant (Sam Spiegelman/SEC Country)
Bryant said Wednesday that Auburn has worked its way into a top 2 with Georgia. LSU also is becoming a big factor, and his official visit there could change the entire situation. But Auburn went from a non-contender to a program with a legitimate chance to land Bryant on National Signing Day.

He still favors Georgia over everyone. But Auburn has a shot. Plus, the Tigers will receive the last official visit from Bryant on the weekend of Jan. 28. That has to be a positive sign so close to his Feb. 1 decision day.

Auburn might still be somewhat of a secondary option, but that’s better than the Tigers have been throughout Bryant’s recruitment.

2. Big Cat can serve as an edge rusher in several capacities

If he does choose Auburn, what will the Tigers be adding?

Well, for starters, Bryant is inordinately fast off the edge for a linebacker/defensive lineman. All the schools in his top group offer different defensive schemes, which means it’s uncertain whether Bryant (6-4, 225) will be more of a linebacker or defensive lineman at the next level. He showed his ability to do both effectively on the first day of practice.

For the most part, Bryant worked with his hand on the ground as a defensive end. There were a few occasions where he worked standing up, finding his way around the edge as more of an outside linebacker. He enjoys both, and he thinks that versatility separates him from many players in the 2017 class.

At Auburn, he’d likely fit into the Buck defensive end spot — think Carl Lawson. For Georgia, he’d be more of a Leonard Floyd type who stood up on the perimeter. Either way, Bryant will use his speed to his advantage to rush the passer.

3. Anders Carlson, like his brother, is a machine

It became second nature this season. Daniel Carlson lines up for a field goal — Auburn scores three points.

Even when Daniel is gone, don’t expect that to change for Auburn. His younger brother, Anders Carlson, spent much of the practice session kicking long-distance field goals for Team Highlight. I didn’t watch every kick, but I watched about 90 percent of them. On those attempts, I only saw Anders miss one field goal. It came from 50-plus yards. He also managed to hit a couple from comparable distances.

During team kicking drills, Anders showed off his ability to do it against rushes. Team Highlight coaches marveled at Carlson’s leg strength.

His two most impressive makes: One was stuck on the top of a tall tree and one landed on a roof. I’m not sure what kind of food is being cooked in the Carlson household, but it works.

4. Chandler Wooten impresses people with his versatility

A common question for Wooten: What position will you play at the next level?

The answers to this question is limited to two options — inside linebacker or outside linebacker. That’s all it ever will be, really. And, in reality, Wooten will likely do both at the next level. He did both for his high school, and Travis Williams encourages his linebackers to learn every linebacker position on the defense.

What was most impressive to me Wednesday was the work Wooten did in pass coverage. Team Armour coaches spread out Wooten wide for some of the team’s 7-on-7 drills. He trailed some slot receivers. And based on the reps I saw, he wasn’t giving up anything in the passing game.

That shows how athletic Wooten is for a guy who played inside linebacker for the better part of his senior season at North Cobb (Ga.)

Also, Wooten is proving to be better than the 13th-highest-rated non-specialist high school commit on Auburn’s list.

5. Georgia and Alabama are making life tough for Auburn

I guess this isn’t something I “learned” Wednesday, but it’s something that becomes more and more obvious with every conversation with prospects. The team rankings say a lot — Alabama at No. 1 and Georgia at No. 3. But, for Auburn in particular, the Bulldogs and the Crimson Tide are creating major problems.

Alabama always makes life complicated for its in-state rivals. Georgia’s ability to secure much of the state’s best talent this season has added a new obstacle during the 2017 recruiting cycle.

Just among Under Armour participants, here’s a look at players who already have or likely will pick Georgia or Alabama over Auburn. For most of these players, the Tigers have them at the top or near the top of their recruiting board.

- Alex Leatherwood
- DeAngelo Gibbs
- Markaviest Bryant
- LaBryan Ray

So according to update by KN before McGriff left we were in line to land 4* S Devon Hunter. Now he puts our chances around 40% or so with us needing to nail the DB coach hire....

Ya I think it's interesting we are going with Wiliis over the instate options like Malik Cunningham, Kaderius Toney and Bubba Thompson

247 profile
highlights

Dude is quick and gives us that home run option again at QB spot. It appears he's got a strong arm and decent accuracy but then again these are highlights. Reminds me some of Nick Marshall on some of those runs with his ability to just not be touched

Numbers are getting tight now. With Bill Taylor blueshirting that means we have 7 spots left. 2 of those spots are going to Willis and FB Chase Lasater. 2 more will go to DL options so last 3 will go to some order of WR/OL/LB/S. There's also the dream of landing all 3 of Ryan Johnson, Markaviest Bryant and Aubrey Solomon but that's a longshot at this point. All that to say I am interested to see what position we prioritize here in the last month because we can't take Jordan Tucker, Tamorrion Terry (or any 2nd WR), Tyler Taylor AND a safety (Devon Hunter or Tray Bishop being the goals).

I say pass on the 2nd WR and take Tucker, Taylor and whatever we can get at S then shoot for 3 WRs next cycle

5-star Alabama commit Alex Leatherwood describes skill set of best friend Nick Brahms (SECCountry)
quote:

Auburn will get Brahms, however, who will enroll early. Leatherwood said Thursday that the Tigers are receiving a gem.

“I feel like he’s going to do very, very well. He’s a great competitor. He learns quick. He’s smart, and he’s a very professional player,” Leatherwood said.

Brahms is a 4-star recruit and the No. 146 overall prospect in the 2017 class, according to the 247Sports composite rankings. He is listed as an offensive guard — No. 8 at the position in the country — but, according to Leatherwood, Brahms is a multi-talented lineman who can be successful at either of the interior offensive line spots.

That versatility should allow Brahms to thrive at Auburn, Leatherwood said.

“He can play center or guard. So I feel like he fits that system well,” Leatherwood said. “He’ll go in and mold into a great player.”

LSU commit Lowell Narcisse explains how close he came to choosing Auburn (SECCountry)
quote:

He took an official visit to Auburn. Shortly after, he de-committed from LSU and set a Jan. 1 commitment date. According to Narcisse, that was a strategic move on his part to make LSU to hire an offensive coordinator.

“I had always promised (Auburn coaches) that I would come back and see the place. That’s what I did,” Narcisse said. “Along that process, I also thought that I was going to force LSU to hire an offensive coordinator by me de-committing. That kind of helped that process.”

Ultimately, LSU quickly hired former Pittsburgh OC Matt Canada for the same position. For recruiting purposes, it filled a major need. Fellow LSU quarterback commit Myles Brennan updated his recruitment from re-opened to officially committed.

Narcisse followed suit soon after, citing “Canada’s résumé” as the confirming factor.

Still weird to me that it took him decommitting for O to realize he should probably hire an OC. Looks like chances were real slim he was going to end up at AU

Auburn offers dual-threat QB who decommitted from Virginia Tech (AL.com)
quote:

Malik Willis announced his decommitment from Virginia Tech on Thursday night. Not long after, he confirmed he has an offer from Auburn.

The Tigers landed a standout junior college transfer in former Baylor quarterback Jarrett Stidham, but don't have a high school player committed at the position.

Auburn had a commitment from Tray Bishop of Dawson, Ga., but he decided he will likely play defense in college and then decommitted from Auburn.

Auburn then lost out in the Lowell Narcisse sweepstakes, as the four-star re-committed to LSU.

The 6-foot-2, 198-pound Willis is a three-star athlete, but took Roswell to the 6A Georgia State championship. He hit 184 of 304 passes for 2,562 yards with 27 touchdowns to nine interceptions and ran 140 times for 1,033 yards and 10 scores as Roswell went 14-1.

It's early in the process now, but Willis is a name to track over the next month.

He's an EE so he will probably commit pretty soon

Three-point stance: UA QBs; 2017 standouts; OL a cut above (Rivals)
quote:

3. Offensive line is the deepest group in Orlando

Okay, I’ve mentioned Leatherwood and Ruiz and how elite they have been through the first two days, but they haven’t been alone. I’ve been impressed with Georgia commitment Isaiah Wilson, Alabama commitment Jedrick Wills, LSU commitment Austin Deculus (especially when working inside and at second level), Auburn commitment Calvin Ashley (working inside), Tennessee commitment Trey Smith (inside as well), Miami commitment Navaughn Donaldson, Penn State commitment C.J. Thorpe and Texas Tech commitment Jack Anderson. The offensive line is the deepest and most impressive position this week by far.

buddy of mine that coaches HSFB in FL is good friends with Fuente. He also helps Auburn with the summer camps a lot. Basically, if Fuente wants this kid, we should too.

If Alabama and Stanford were recruiting my kid, the kid would wind up at Stanford just for the education, which is priceless. They play great ball there as well.

Ya I won't be mad if he picks Stanford. Disappointed but hard to fault a kid for thinking long term and a Stanford degree holds a lot of weight nationally. I still think we land him but it's going to be a battle. Wish he was playing in the all star game to see how he stacks up beside someone like LaBryan Ray who has been a boss
