I don't proclaim to know enough about the international soccer market to speak intelligently on whether the moves Atlanta United have made/are contemplating this offseason make the team better or worse. However I can say that I really really hate seeing guys like Nagbe, Gressel, LGP, Meram, and possibly now Villaba leave the team.

quote:Was leaving regardless. His family is in Ohio and he wanted us to trade him there a year ago (that's why he wasn't involved in preseason in 2019).
Nagbe
quote:Team wasn't willing to pay him more than about $550k before hearing what's in the new CBA. Gressel wanted more and didn't want to wait. DC was willing to offer him ~$750k+.
Gressel
quote:I didn't mind selling him, but I can see why people didn't like it. We essentially swapped LGP for Meza. Meza may be a little cheaper.
LGP
quote:We got a great deal on him. He was on a $650k contract, but we only had to pay $150k of it. Columbus was paying the rest.
Meram
quote:Surprised it's taken this long. We're paying him WAY too much money to not be a starter. He was our 4th highest paid player last year.
Villaba

quote:Really can't know until our roster is complete and we play a game. Nagbe is almost irreplaceable at his cap hit. We did officially buy Hyndman to lessen the blow, but we're also looking to bring in one more starter-quality CM/DCM (Villasanti or Ivan Gomez?)

We brought in Brooks Lennon to help Gressel but also on the off-chance that we moved Gressel. Only 22 and is a player we've been after for a while. Probably a better defender than Gressel, but Gressel is probably a better crosser. Can really play anywhere on the right side. Got called up to the current USMNT camp, but Atlanta didn't release him (we also refused to release Robinson and Guzan).
We brought in Meza to replace LGP. Don't know much about Meza, so can't comment much about that. We also brought back Anton Walkes. He primarily played RB for us in 2017, but is actually a CB that can play RB or DCM (and maybe LB).
We brought in Castillo who can play LB or the LWB that Meram played. He's also here to mentor Bello, who is healthy again, so he's also similar to a new signing. If we get Arzamendia, he will also fall into the LB/LWB category, and is likely better than Bello/Castillo.
Signed winger Jake Mulraney, who is a LW/RW, but I'd hate to call him a Villalba replacement yet.

Thanks for the additional info. Seems likely that it is going to take some games for the new look team to mesh but it will be exciting to see the new blood.
Kind of worried about being thrown right into CONCACAF again. Last year was integrating Pity and a new coach. This year we at least have stability with De Boer but now even more new players that need to play great together immediately.
My biggest concern by far is replacing Nagbe. It was so nice to know you could roll him out there every game and have a stabilizing force in the middle of the field.

Like I said, he's almost irreplaceable because his salary was only ~$650k. To get his skill and production, you would almost need to bring in another DP level player, and we have filled our 3 DP slots.

I think everything you posted here is sound reasoning...that doesn't make losing those guys hurt any less though, strictly from a fan's standpoint.
We've all (mostly) watched this team shape, and win from the start and seeing all of our loved, favorite players get traded away just stings. There's very few guys remaining from when the team was formed. I get that not everyone will be there forever, but it still hurts the heart to lose them.
Really looking forward to next week when AUFC comes to Birmingham to get a nice up close and personal look of both teams.

I think that's just life under the current salary cap if you want to maintain a top team.
Now the hard part is finding players that are equal or better for cheaper, and finding the best values.

Looks like we're finalizing a deal for Matheus Rossetto.
23 year old CAM/CM from Brazil.

We can wrap up the deal for Arzamendia after he finishes the Olympic qualifying tournament. His last game with Paraguay could be on Friday.

We're currently beating the dog shite out of Philly. Up 4-0 after the first half with goals by Josef, Pity (2x), and an own goal on a cross from Mulraney.

Where are you watching? I found a box score of sorts that says the goals are:
Hyndman 1'
Mulraney 5'
Pity 35'
Pity 44'
Hyndman 1'
Mulraney 5'
Pity 35'
Pity 44'

Sounds like Lennon is playing well. He's younger than Gressel was when he was drafted.

rumor is they're working to put together a stream for Saturday's match against IF Elfsborg
