Silver Fields of Dreams

If you pay them, they will come. (For at least a year)

One of the greatest lies perpetuated about Arkansas football is that there isn't enough instate talent to be competitive.

I said it in a thread yesterday…but you can recruit the top guys in state, hammer East Oklahoma (Tulsa metro) and that can normally always be a solid foundation to a recruiting class.

If we can actually keep the ones that show an ounce of elite talent from getting poached after a breakout year, I'll start to believe. Until then it's just more of the same. That goes for all recruits in general. I think this "they gotta love the helmet" thing is getting overblown in the NIL era. These kids were 2-3 years old the last time Arkansas football was worth a damn.

Add Memphis and North Louisiana.

I get that, getting them is one thing but keeping them is another. Especially in the NIL era we are in now. That will be a tough sell for Silverfield.

You and I are typically on the same page. Yes, I wanted Petrino but damnit he just didn’t get it done to get hired. In fact, I didn’t think there was another possible hire better than him in running a program.

Not gonna happen…this is who we have now to lead us. This is the ONLY sports program I follow and I’m not gonna shite on the guy or his efforts when he’s just getting started. Locking up the state is smart and like others have said, our best team leadership was the best when lead by kids with Arkansas pride. Something’s got to change in this program…quality start I would say

Meh. It's nice that 2 were DL that MAYBE can be depth at the end of the season next year. That doesn't really do much for us though. We need 5* instant impact guys from this recruiting class. Not guys who will transfer before we can get any use out of them.

Unless you are getting instant impact guys HS recruiting is largely irrelevant. If we could keep them after spending time developing them it would be different. Spending money on projects is wasteful and largely window dressing to get a fanbase back on board. It's to convince you to eat another shite sandwich..... and it's working.

I don't like see you guys get worked up only to get let down again. There is nothing here that points to him being the answer so far. Land a couple of impact studs and get a MASSIVE portal class and I'll change my tune but not a moment before.

Day 1 and he’s doing what I said had to happen. Going and getting kids that will play for the helmet and their home state. I went from pissed to jacked in 24 hrs

"The Answer"

Wait, do you think there's somebody that's gonna have Lane Kiffin-at-Ole Miss level success here in 3 seasons?

Arkansas is looking for their Hugh Freeze - not their Lane Kiffin.

Edit - We ain't going 2-10 to 9-3 next year. I'm just looking for a builder.

Of course…I’m just hammering the all time excuse with our program…”It’s not near enough talent” which is bullshite…go an hour and 45 minutes west and get a handful of great blue chippers…then hammer your home state…then of course, hit southern Missouri, Memphis, and the Ruston/West Monroe/Shreveport corridor every damn year.

Sprinkle in a few Texas guys…but back in the day, our best OL’s were anchored by Arkansas kids…

Mitch Petrus, Grant Cook, Shawn Andrews, Brandon Burlsworth, Nate Garner, Jonathan Luigs, Stephen Parker, Bo Lacy, Mitch Smithers, Brey Cook, and Grant Freeman. All Arkansas kids. Nutt was probably the best we had at getting under recruited Arkansas OL and having them ready to roll by their junior years.

That's all fine, and none of this has anything to do with Petrino. My reservations with Silverfield aren't tied to that. Nor do I consider any of this a bad thing, but it's also not what it's being made out to be right now.

If we're all willing to be realisitic, we know Arkansas high schools aren't some untapped gold mine of talent, nor does signing a recruit from here in the current era of college football mean we've got some die-hard, sacrifice everything for the hog player. We still have to get lucky, the same as a recruit from anywhere else. Perhaps even moreso.

Braylen Russell is an Arkansas kid and we had to throw money at him and beg him to stay here like we would anyone else. Our top recruit two classes ago was an Arkansas kid and he can barely get on the field on one of the worst defenses we've ever fielded.

Is it a good start? Yes. Is it the key to turning the program around? I doubt it. I need to see more before I start pumping sunshine like usual.

That's not how this works any longer. Kids go to the highest bidder.

Well, that sucks. I guess we should have let them sign with Missouri, Oklahoma, and Miami while hoping for the best.

My bad. I didn't know how this works.

Petrino saw Setenga go and contribute at OU, Hasz to OM, Teslaa was apparently the best WR we've had since Burkes but we wouldn't know because not if these guys were utilized in the offense. I'm sure I'm missing more, it wasn't NIL funds causing them to leave, it was lack of studs being fed.

Someone can chime in about Silverfield's retention rate at Memphis if anyone should be having players poached due to NIL it would be the G5 schools.

its starting to appear the majority of the NIL issues stem from a lack of fundraising by Hunter and Pittman and a mis allocation of fund by Pittman and the OC and DC.
