ARKANSAS ON THE COME-UP

quote:

I was struck over the last two days - whether it was at registration day or at the combine - just how many elite Arkansas players are coming up in the 2021 and 2022 classes. It could be a huge boon for first-year coach Sam Pittman with the Razorbacks if he plays his cards right and keeps these top prospects in the state.

I liked 2022 Andrew Chamblee the most. He’s a 6-foot-7, 300-pound offensive tackle from Maumelle, Ark., who plays a lot like Texas A&M signee Chris Morris, a four-star in the 2020 class who is slightly bigger and longer.

Then there is 2021 three-star defensive tackle Tyas Martin from Jacksonville, Ark., a 6-foot-4, 315-pound recruit who plays like a bull in a china shop. Terry Wells, a 2021 offensive tackle from Wynne, Ark., landed an offer from the Razorbacks on Friday and that was definitely a wise move, because he looks great as well.

Big JR Day Saturday and Wynne OT Terry Wells committed.

quote:

Wynne (Ark.) offensive lineman Terry Wells has committed to Arkansas.

Wells, 6-4, 282, became the Razorbacks' first commitment for the Class of 2021 on Saturday evening at the end of his junior day visit on the Hill. He chose the home state Razorbacks over early offers from Kansas, Southern Miss and Arkansas State.

"It feels awesome, amazing," Wells said. "I had a talk with Coach (Sam) Pittman, went through the process, had a talk with Coach Brad Davis and I already had made up my mind."

Wells was one of approximately 40 underclassmen in Fayetteville for Pittman's first junior day as head coach of the Razorbacks.

"It truly fit me," Wells said. "I loved everything about it, the coaching staff, the fans, it's home to me. It's the place to be."

Wells will stay on the Hill and celebrate his decision tonight.

"I just made it back to the hotel room," he said. "We're going to head out tomorrow."

Wow that’s a hell of a way to start off the next class. I really didn’t think he’d commit this quick.

The Razorbacks will hold Pro Day on Wednesday, March 11 inside Walker Pavilion. Arkansas begins spring practice the following week on Monday, March 16 with the team’s first spring workout. The Razorbacks will practice three times that week before taking a week off for spring break. The team returns to practice on Tuesday, March 31 with the team’s first scrimmage of the spring set for that weekend on Saturday, April 4.

quote:

The Razorbacks wrap up spring practice on Saturday, April 25 inside Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium with the team’s final spring practice open to the public. Arkansas submitted a waiver to the Southeastern Conference requesting permission to hold the final spring scrimmage in Little Rock. An approved waiver from the SEC is required to hold any spring practice off campus. The waiver was not approved.

SEC 2020 spring game dates

April 3 -- Vanderbilt
April 4 -- South Carolina
April 11 -- Auburn, Kentucky, Mississippi State & Missouri
April 18 -- Alabama, Florida, Georgia, LSU, Ole Miss, Tennessee & Texas A&M

Arkansas not set but Sam Pittman has said April 25 likely the date

Arkansas just confirmed its spring game will be played on April 25 in Fayetteville.

The game is not being moved to Little Rock after waiver to do so was denied.

Unfortunately news for Little Rock fans but this should help Arkansas in recruiting for the 2021 class.

“I loved the visit," Salter said. "I got to see the whole campus, the indoor, the dorms where I would stay if I went here. It was beautiful.”

“Arkansas was surprising but at the same time, the fan base let me know everything on Twitter. The fan base is pretty straight forward. It was everything I expected.”

quote:

“I’ve known Coach Briles since I was a freshman when I went to camp at Houston," Salter said. "He told me he would find me again and he did. Our relationship is great.

“I love Coach Briles’ offense. I was in the quarterback room watching them go through fim, watched the techniques and drills, even watched the quarterbacks in the weight room.”

quote:

“Coach Pittman had great energy, I loved him," Salter said. "He told me I'd fit in the offense great. As far as I could see, I also fit. We watched some highlights and film from the quarterback history and I could see myself in this offense.”

quote:

“I’m not going to rush it but most likely I’ll hopefully be committed by my senior season or mid-season," he said. "Arkansas will most definitely get an official visit. I’ll look into Ole Miss more, I don’t know.”

quote:

“Most likely the SEC will probably be the best thing for me," he said. "Most of my offers that I’m interested in are SEC schools. One of them might be the pick.”

After hearing from Salter and sources on this end, I'm going ahead with a Crystal Ball pick for Salter to Arkansas. Obviously he may be a long way out, but I've got Arkansas as the heavy favorite as of today.

Kaidon Salter, Cedar Hill (Texas)
Composite Rank: No. 244
Recruitment Status: Arkansas, Auburn, Baylor, Ole Miss and South Carolina are running “warm” in his recruitment

quote:

“I'm going to really lean into the Fields comparison here, because Fields really began his ascent right about now in Kaidon Salter's timeline. We punched Fields up to just outside the Top100 in our post-season update and then the camp circuit really sold us on him. I think the same thing could happen with Salter. His numbers to this point haven't been gaudy, but his talent is really evident. He's athletic but is still a throw-first quarterback. It feels like he's just starting to find his footing and evolve into an alpha sort of role nationally. From a skillset standpoint he reminds me some of CJ Stroud from last class more so than Fields, but he's showing indications that he could climb in the same way that both of those guys did during their recruitments.” – Barton Simmons, Director of Recruiting

quote:

"I’m not sure we’ll see a similar rise like we did with Fields, a player jumping from outside the top 100 to a top five overall prospect, but Kaidon Salter is pretty intriguing for me. He has already made a big move in our rankings, jumping from outside the 247 to No. 89 overall. I recently compared him to another player who made a big move just a year ago, Ohio State signee CJ Stroud. Stroud was a three-star following his junior year but finished as a five-star in our final rankings in January. Salter has really shined at several off-season events and his junior tape is impressive as well. He’s an athletic, two-sport athlete who is just coming in to his own as a player and isn’t even close to peaking right now. Look for him to continue to rise up the charts and with a strong summer and senior year, there is no reason why he can’t finish as a five-star just like Stroud a year ago.” – Greg Biggins, National Analyst

Pittman and Briles need to keep a death grip on Salter. I still think we’re the favorites but EVERYONE wants him now.
