I thought he might get squeezed out last year when OF numbers were super tight.

I'm guessing the draft officially being cut to 5 rounds will generate a lot of movement.

I hope we get more of our signees to campus than others in the SEC, but I'm also concerned about how many may just go the JUCO route to be draft-eligible sooner.

Casey Opitz brother (Shane Opitz) was volunteer coach at Northern Colorado. Said he should give our program a look.

Van Horn coached one of Casey's older brothers at Nebraska didn't he? I think he had another committed and went in the MLB draft too.

I'm not sure but that would be pretty crazy. He's been here for 17-18 years.

Article from our last trip to the CWS

quote:

For Casey Opitz, a freshman catcher for the Razorbacks, memories of Omaha began in 2005 when his brother, Jake, took the field for Nebraska the last time the Huskers earned a berth in the tournament.

quote:

After his time with the Huskers, Opitz was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in 2008 and played seven years in the minors before hip surgery ended his career in 2015. He quickly found a new calling with coaching, however, and he now manages the Colorado Rockies’ Double-A affiliate the Grand Junction Rockies.

quote:

The Opitz family has another family member in the baseball world with middle brother Shane currently playing for the Milwaukee Brewers’ Triple-A affiliate, the Colorado Springs Sky Sox.

Shane was also interested in joining the Huskers’ baseball program but chose to sign with the Toronto Bluejays after being selected in the 11th round of the 2010 First-Year Player Draft.

Added another grad transfer in San Francisco catcher Robert Emery.

LINK

quote:

A two-time selection for the Buster Posey Award watch list, he was riding a 13-game hitting streak - during which he went 22 for 49 (.449) with seven multi-hit games - when the season ended. Including the four games prior to that stretch, Emery hit .381/.451/.540 with two home runs and nine RBIs in 2020.

Emery actually began his career at Dartmouth, where he hit .275 overall and .340 in conference play as a freshman in 2016. That earned him second-team All-Ivy League honors. After that season, he chose to transfer back to his hometown of San Francisco, which required him to sit out the 2017 season.

Surprised we're taking so many grad transfers with the roster going to be tight enough as it is

The Hogs have added another grad transfer catcher to their roster in former Eastern Kentucky Colonel AJ Lewis. He is the second immediately eligible catcher to join the Razorback roster this week, as first reported by the Arkansas Democratic Gazette.

A Buster Posey National Collegiate Catcher of the Year Candidate, Lewis was spectacular for Eastern Kentucky this past season. In 13 games, he hit for an average of .451 for the Colonels while driving in 21 RBI. The Chicago (Ill.) native also hit three homers while knocking seven doubles and two triples. He spent his freshman season at Mizzou before transferring John A. Logan College as a sophomore. Arkansas will be his fourth collegiate program to contribute to.

Razorback catcher Dominic Tamez has entered the transfer portal. The San Antonio (Texas) native was a freshman this past season, and he appeared in eight games in relief of junior Casey Opitz.

DVH saw quickly his receiving of pitches wasn't going to work.

That and I think it's becoming more of a possibility that Optiz is back next year...combined with the 2-3 transfers we're adding at that position.

Who did we get in baseball that Danny mentioned?

Also, 2021 schedule includes UAPB, UCA, UALR, and State.

Would take some studying but I can't recall a day in which Arkansas football, basketball and baseball each landed huge commitments on the same day. #HawgSports

ETA: Nvm he clarified who it was..

Chase Brewster @Brewsterc29 6h

All I heard the last two months was how no college coaches would be out this summer so what’s the point of playing. First weekend out and the Sticks had over 10 D1 scholarships offered this weekend, mostly all SEC, and not one college coach in the stands #WhyPlayAnywhereElse

Chase Brewster @Brewsterc29 14m

Remember when I said several Sticks kids picked up offers this weekend! Two Razorbacks commits in the same day, both from the same school. Not many 2022 left handed hitters in the country like Reese. Couldn’t be happier for him and his family. Kennett HS has some studs #Sticks

Doin' work.

Sidenote: these Sticks unis are fire.

Sounds like there's a fairly good chance he stays.
