Yep - falls right in line with what everyone has been noting on rewatches. #8 and #2 specifically (and #10 to an extent, though not entirely the same issues as 8/2).
I can't decide if I'm relieved that it was just those 2/3 lost the whole game or not. On one hand, your ILBs and Safeties being lost is really bad. On the other hand, if our DL and LBs were just getting physically abused......that's kind of an unfixable problem. This wasn't that.

Nice video, but I'm sorry, it's more that Harris and Hellams.

HTT and Battle could easily be thrown in there, too, but yea it's the entire middle of the defense.

Which was the same issue we had at the beginning of last year, as I recall.
We don't have Charlie Strong on staff this year; be interesting to see how we fix the problem this time.

Why should we be relieved?
We saw Dylan Moses and Mack Wilson play timid and late (both began their careers much more aggressive) and we still have fans questioning if their position coach (who just so happens to be the DC) should be challenged.
Golding is a problem and usually when we win it's not because of him.
That isn't our only issue though. We only have one good-to-great WR and Saban apparently isn't trusting the young guys enough (Jojo and A.Hall).
Rope that in with our very talented young QB's very visible struggles with reading deep and throwing on time (and accurately) deep.... and we're predictable and easier to contain or stop.

That is the track record that counteracts the "fixable problem" thing. And it is not encouraging.

Eh, we have offensive things to fix, but we are not easy to stop. Florida basically needed to stop us 1 time in the 2nd half to win the game and they couldn't do it. They had 2 defensive drives where all they needed was to stop us from scoring and we marched 75 yards down the field on the road both times and scored. And then, when they had to stop us and knew we'd run the football we still got 2 first downs and killed the game.
We're scoring on the majority of our drives, and most of those are TDs. We aren't as explosive, we are stumbling a bit up front and with the receivers, but our offense is still pretty damn good.

There are 3 or 4 guys on the defense that are hoping someone else will make the tackle. I don’t know if that’s just who they are when it’s fight or flight time, they’re hiding an injury, they’re scared of an injury, or what it is. There were at least two occasions where we had a free blitzer bee lining at Jones on Saturday, and they basically slowed down 75% when they got within two yards and let him get the pass off.
I don’t expect 2011 results out of this group but I do expect 2011 effort and accountability. Dre Kirkpatrick came and left this university as a string bean and he wouldn’t shy away from knocking the snot of of someone’s nose, because he knew his classmates would hold him accountable when film got reviewed on Monday. There was no room in the building for being a soft football player. We’ve had some in the early years that weren’t the most talented, but they were never afraid to sit someone in the mouth. One of my favorite plays in Bama history is a pretty minuscule one, but it’s Marlon Humphrey meeting Leonard Fournette at the line of scrimmage, 1 vs 1 and outweighed by 40 pounds, and planting his arse in the dirt.
We have guys on our starting defense that I have no doubt would feign a tackle attempt in that situation rather than honestly attempting to get him on the ground. That is softness.
Jordan Battle will light a receiver up if he’s got an easy shot at him, but he wants nothing to do with a back running downhill with his shoulders squared. Hellams is the same way. I can’t figure out if Harris would rather someone else make the tackle or if he is somehow still slow at reacting to what’s going on. If it’s the latter that could be a harris problem or a golding problem. There are times when Harris looks like Reuben Foster and times when he just extends his arms, engages a guard, and totally gives up on a play because a lineman touches him. We used to trot out 11 junkyard dogs on defense. Some of them never played a meaningful snap in the NFL but they got tf after it while they were here. I’d like to see a lot more anger and malice from that side of the ball at the point of contact with the ball carrier

It's very hard to watch our guys, who are generally the same level of recruit, and then watch Georgia's guys play defense.
Georgia's defense plays with the exact attitude and aggressive rage that you are talking about that we used to play with (with their head coach). They fly EVERYWHERE. They concede NOTHING. Do they get beat some? Yes. Are they perfect? No. Is it crystal clear that you will not play on that defense unless you are fearless and want contact? YES.
We are not that anymore.

After they made their adjustments we scored 10 points. That was over 3 quarters.
If that isn't stopping us, I don't know what is...
As I have repeatedly stated on here the moment they realized we weren't really deep threat they forced us to run between the tackles (harder getting outside when safeties are so aggressive) and disrupted our short pass game (we were struggling for space in our intermediate passing game).

Well, we scored 10 points on 2 possessions in the 2nd half. Both of which started at our own 25. Our offense only got the ball 2 times because our defense couldn't get off the damn field.
The offense had 3 second half drives and all 3 were successful
- Florida cuts leads to 5. Offense goes on 13 play, 75 yard drive to score a TD and make it up a 12 pt game again.
- Florida cuts lead to 5 again. Offense goes on a 14 play, 64 yard drive to kick a FG and make it a 8 pt game.
- Florida cuts lead to 2. Offense gets ball back with 3:10 left in the game, gets a 1st down, forces Florida to use all their time outs and punts back to them with 4 seconds left in the game, effectively closing the door.
So, I mean, "only 10 points" sounds bad in theory, but that theory is based around the idea that we had more than 2-3 drives. The offense can't force the referee to give us the ball for more times to score.

I mean they literally did not stop us. If they had, they would have won the game, because our defense wasn't stopping them. If they'd made us punt on either long drive or made us go 3 and out on the last one, they win the game.
But they couldn't stop us, so they lost and we won.

I was a Golding apologist in 2018 (assuming he was calling the defense for part of that year) and then 2019. I believed -- and still do, to an extent -- that in 2019 in particular he was hamstrung by injuries and inexperience in the middle of the defense.
Even in 2020, I was willing to believe in him ... but I fell off the bandwagon after Ole Miss. I'm of the opinion that the improvement after that game was due to Charlie Strong.
I've been converted to the Church of Anyone But Golding. His schemes may be fine on the blackboard, but it seems to me they're causing our guys (especially in the middle) to think too much and play slow.
He's also way too slow to adjust to in-game strategies by the opposing offense. Tw1st3d gave an excellent breakdown of how to attack Florida's speed option in a different thread, and it was a fairly simple adjustment ... but it was one we never made.
We're stuck for this year with him, but I really hope a change is made after this season.

You're being selective and ignoring the 2nd quarter.
Bill O'Brien isn't an idiot. He knew we had struggles deep and they were coming up crashing down on us. He made adjustments. Even with them we needed things going our way, especially after a TD drop which could have been the decider.
This doesn't change the fact BOB will have to scheme something special and adjust significantly when every team plays us the same way.
Either that or we find some consistency on that deep ball and make team's pay for not respecting us.

We went 3 & out on all 3 drives in the 2nd quarter due to stupid penalties. Despite how poorly our defense played in the 2nd-4th quarters, a TD on any of those 3 drives would've put the game out of reach.

We had a bad quarter for sure (the 2nd)......almost exactly like we had a bad quarter in the 2020 game (the 3rd)
2021 - 1, 3, 4 QTR
6 possessions
4 TDs
1 FG
1 Punt (that killed the game)
5.17 PPD
2021 - 2 QTR
3 possessions
3 punts (3 and outs)
0.00 PPD
2020 - 1, 2, 4 QTR
10 drives
7 TDs
1 FG
1 Punt (that sealed the game)
5.20 PPD
2020 - 3 QTR
2 drives
1 Turnover on Downs
1 Punt
0.00 PPD
2020 Florida Game - 4.33 Points Per Drive
2021 Florida Game - 3.44 Points Per Drive
Again, I'm not trying to tell you we are clicking on all cylinders. We are not. But, for the new pieces and coaches and environment, I think our offense did their job on Saturday. No turnovers, scored when they needed to, didn't shut down after we had a bad 2nd quarter, etc.
We absolutely do have to get more explosive. There's no doubt about that. Whether that's scheme, Bryce making those longer throws, throwing in some of the kids who can make plays or what, we gotta figure that out. We are going to need it in 2 weeks.

Wasn't just penalties. They adjusted their defense.
I don't see why we can't give them credit for that. They adjusted their offense after that first quarter as well.

You are basing this on statistics when we both know statistics and be used to say just about anything.
You admit we had a bad second quarter, correct?
Well there is a reason why. They adjusted on both sides of the ball after that first half.
We adjusted on offense at halftime.
We attemlted to adjust on defense but the "solution" wasn't working and we had players playing horrible (Hellams, C.Harris, To'o, Kobe, etc).

Oh I mean we can, they certainly did and it almost bought them enough stops to win the game. But we then adjusted back nicely after halftime.
If our defense had adjusted and executed the same way our offense did we would have won the game by 20.

I got ya now - I think I completely misread what you were saying and that's my bad. Yes, I absolutely agree with you. Florida adjusted defensively and we hit a wall, and then we adjusted on offense at halftime.

I know it is only 3 games in but been a long time since Bama was 11th in the league in rushing and 12th in rushing defense
And 121st in penalties per game
And 121st in penalties per game
