Will Coronavirus help solidify Mac Jones as the starter for this season?

It’s a boring time, so there is lots of time for stupid thoughts.
I’ll preface this by saying that I figure that Mac will be the starter even if Coronavirus were not a thing. Anyway, Bryce Young is an early enrollee, however he (along with the entire team) have been deprived of spring practice, they may be deprived of at least some of their summer activities, and the season could possibly be delayed. All of these things at least mean it’ll take longer for Young to develop and will give him less of a chance to earn the job. So, the limited amount f time the team may have together before the season, along with the reduction of time for Bryce Young to put work in, should seemingly help solidify Mac as the starter.

As you said, Mac was going to be the starter anyway. My only “thought” is that I just hope there is a football season.

I wonder if players can practice together on their own. Like maybe 7 on 7.

Currently banned by the SEC -- pretty much ALL football-related player activities are suspended.

What about the ncaa? Is it banned nationwide? If not, then it would seem to be detrimental to SEC teams vs those teams that are not limited, both in terms of preparedness and in terms of those other teams continued recruiting of SEC players.

I haven't seen any reports of the NCAA mandating suspension of recruiting or sports activities other than basketball tournaments. But I haven't searched for such reports either.

It all depends on who this Bryce Young fellow is. Right now, he's the second coming of Tua, so that's a mouthful as far as expectations are concerned. Tua played a lot of football for Bama in his freshman year. He played against SEC teams and got serious minutes. So much so that at the end of the season he was ready to do his MVP thing against Georgia in the natty.
With or without spring ball I see Young getting to kick the tires early in meaningful games this season. At that point, Alabama fans are going to know in a hurry if Young is the next Tua. By season's end, with all our contenders, it all works itself out.

The real question might be whether it give Taulia an advantage to be the number 2 QB. In the video of the brothers throwing the ball it was noted that the ball never hit the ground.

The NCAA has instituted a recruiting dead period until at least April 15th.

But these days recruiting never really ends, even after the player is signed and playing for another team. It's not acknowledged since it is, in fact, against rules, but it happens.

If Bryce Young is as good as advertised, then I hope Saban and Sark play him early. The staff almost waited too late to start Tua in 2017. Young will have a great supporting cast so my thought is that he plays a lot regardless if Jones is QB1. If it becomes evident that he's better than Mac then my hope is that Saban and Sark make him QB1. I thought that Tua should have at least played against Auburn in 2017 when Jalen struggled so much. It nearly cost us a playoff spot. Hopefully the staff makes the move sooner this year if Young proves to be a reliable play maker and manager of the offense. I personally think that several freshmen have a chance to play on offense this year. Traeshon Holden, Jones-Bell and McClellan will play IMO.

You can’t do 7 on 7 anyway. Too many people gathered together in one spot.

What Bryce Young is doing during coronavirus shutdown (BamaOnLine)
Good article.

Probably going to be tough for Bryce Young.
Assuming there is a football season, would think Mac has the job locked down

It was always gonna be tough for a true freshman to come in and beat out Mac Jones even with spring practice under his belt. Still, the cream always rises to the top. If Bryce is as good as we think he may be he at worst will log meaningful snaps preparing him for a late season run at the starting job. I am confident in Mac Jones running the offense.

Provided the Wuhan Flu doesn't kill us all; there will be some sort of practice/camp before the start of fall camp. They'll probably just extend fall camp by 15 or so practices.

Agree. Mac is more than capable. I do think we see plenty of Bryce but I think Mac may be the best returning quarterback in conference.

I think it makes it a whole lot more likely - basically makes it as if Bryce showed up in the summer instead of enrolling early.
This whole thing is a disaster for a place like Georgia. New QB to the program, brand new and totally different offense and coordinator and no ability to work on anything on the field or with each other for most of the spring and probably the early part of summer. They'll be installing offense and figuring out the QB stuff basically starting in August.
