Some say it's talent, but we've seen other programs underachieve after landing several top ten classes: Carroll's USC, Bowden's FSU, Ohio State.

So what is it?

He gets the players to play at their max potential the most consistently.

We do not play down to opponents very often, something that plagues other talented teams.

Never satisfied. Relentless culture. Accountability held by players, coaches and previous players to play to a standard.

1. Talent

2. Mental conditioning from Saban and Cochran

3. Attention to detail

4. Singular focus on the Process.

5. Competition internally

He eats the same lunch every day so that his day can be meticulously planned out. He is extremely organized and driven. Way more than any of these other coaches.

It's so cliché and redundant, but it's The Process. You can apply it to anything in life, it actually helped me through college.

He hates to lose, attention to detail, and he understands and teaches the psychology of winning better than any other coach.

This!!! If you haven't read his book, "How good do you want to be?" I suggest you pick up a copy. His "Process" is good for all avenues and walks of life, not just getting 18-22 year old kids to perform at peak performance on a consistent basis. I'm convinced that if Saban were to head up a company as CEO, he would have that thing running as a Fortune 500 company within the year!!!

I agree that talent is far and away the number one factor.

This. I read his book when we hired him and it was really good. It basically boiled down to having discipline which Saban defines as "Doing what you need to be doing even if you don't want to be doing it." How true is that?

As said above, what defines Saban is he is never satisfied and is relentless. How often do you accomplish some task at work and then feel like you can ease up or take a break afterwards? It's human nature to not be able to sustain yourself but Saban keeps the gas down. Like most great businessmen, he also isn't afraid to adapt. However, he is perfect at striking the balance between adapting and maintaining what works.

I think the ability to turnaround a college football program is overrated. In my opinion, it doesn't take much to come in to a program, tap into the hunger of a bunch of people who haven't won anything, and win some games. We see it all the time and it's those coaches who seem to always get the postseason awards and accolades. How often
do we see a team have success under a 1st or 2nd year coach? Practically every season. Sustaining success is a whole different thing and that's what separates the good coaches from the great coaches. That's been the amazing thing about Saban at Alabama. It's also the reason why I think he is heads and shoulders above Meyer.

Saban’s Mercedes is actually a time machine.
3-peat is in the works.
