re: Who could Alabama find as a better coach?
Yea, I'm pretty sure the athletic dept. would survive paying the buyouts. They might not like it, but they'll make the money back, I promise

Will be so embarrassing next year with empty seats everywhere looking like December games on tv

It's going to be really bad. Embarrassing is the right word. I freaking hate that

Trust me, because of what Nick Saban & Bama football brings in terms of revenue, merchandise sales, fall Saturday's on campus we're in great shape financially.

No it's called being realistic. We are not a basketball school and have never been anything close. just because the rest of the SEC cares about basketball now doesn't mean that we have to get rid of average coach for our average program

So I'm the dumb one for realizing that we would have to pay Avery and his entire staff's buyout

Hiring a coach who can win just 20+ and NCAAT bids would easily pay for Avery's buyout with ticket/merchandise sales + donations

quote:

while paying triple for someone like Pitino? He made 7.8 million

Pitino would be lucky to get a HC job for $1mil/yr

quote:

I don't see Alabama spending that kind of money on a basketball coach

You don't need to pay $7mil to get a good basketball coach

You clearly have no idea what you're talking about. Just stick to football since it's obvious you don't know about basketball.

Capstone, you gotta get you're mind right. You see, what we have here is failure to communicate. Basketball is as exciting as any other sport if you're team is involved in the big dance. I took the fun Bama had in the 80's big dance for granted. I thought we would routinely be there. I sure miss those fun days & I promise you, with right coach we can get it back.

What I don't get is why the admin thinks football will enhance recruitment of top students but basketball will not. Ex President Witt made it clear that Saban was the best investment UA ever made, and clearly, the school never grew faster till Saban arrived, so why wouldn't a wise investment in a new basketball coach be a wise one too? Having Bama doing well in March Madness would be helpful for student recruitment, one more way for UA to get the word out. So it seems foolish to be hesitant about investing in a great basketball coach.

That's like saying your winning lotto ticket was your best investment

Schools like Gonzaga, it is the primary driver of school awareness, college experience and pride. It is a huge part of their operation

For Bama, bball isn't going to improve name recognition, pride or take center stage in the experience. They get that all from FB

The benefits from BBall to traditional FB schools are mostly marginal benefits and not foundationslike for mid majors

re: Who could Alabama find as a better coach?
So if that is true, why do all schools run ads even during the basketball season? A top notch basketball program would be just another way to increase exposure to the university.

First, contractual obligations for SEC to run school ads durinf broadcast.

I'm not saying it is a waste, just that you wouldn't reap the rewards of brand building that other schools do. Bama has a strong brand already

Ya it's better than not having one, but barring an absurd investment it isn't easy

re: Who could Alabama find as a better coach?
Another underappreciated dividend for a successful basketball program is increased alumni visits to campus and increased alumni support. The more an alum visits campus, the greater he or she will support the school. When the basketball program sucks, we aren't visiting campus till football season. And even then, it is actually way easier to visit campus during basketball season and it is much easier to stay in town and see another athlethic event or a play at the University's theater.
