what was the worse pain?
losing to loyola-mary after we should've run them out of the gym
providence destroying our best team ever
Indiana cheating us
I almost cried after the Providence loss and I was too old to be crying.

The Providence game just pissed me off. But it wasn't even close. I guess I was just stunned.
Sort of like 44-16 a couple of months ago.
The Loyola Marymount game was just frustrating. I understand what Wimp was doing and it was going to work, but we just missed too many baskets in crunch time.
I don't recall the Indiana game, but from what I've read, that's the worst

This is what makes Alabama's situation particularly aggravating to me... just a few short years ago the teams listed were awful (with the exception of Ole Miss, who was just average), and the two teams I dislike the most (I dislike LSU these days more than UT) have improved exponentially - LSU's current problems notwithstanding.

Can't underestimate when we lost to South Alabama...I was pretty depressed after that loss.

I can go back to all the Sweet 16s we were a part of under Wimp and the heartbreak we would eventually have.
Gottfried’s Elite 8 club was pretty special.

USA was an epic heartbreak along with Loyola. They were America's team coming off Hank Gather's death, shooting 3's at a rapid pace. It was a nip & tuck fourth-quarter battle to the end.

Remember both of those well. Kicked a hole in my college apartment’s wall at the end of the USA game. The Loyola game was just as bad - Horry almost tied it at the end.
Don’t get me started on the Providence game . . . Ugh.

Not gonna lie I was pretty excited during Avery's first year. I thought that team was going to have a losing record, and it looked like we might find a way in the tournament. My belief in Avery has been pretty much downhill from there.
I never felt good about the Sexton team even though they did accomplish some things.

I had high hopes going into this year.

I definitely forgot about the S Ala loss when thinking of brutal hoops moments. That was a bad one.
Gabe f'n Estraba. ughh
weren't we up like 17 at some point?
didn't they almost beat Michigan in the next game?

Same. I thought all the pieces were there to do well in the league, and get a decent NCAA tournament seed. Even into mid-January I liked this team. Then things went to shite.
As far as disappointing losses for the program, nothing will likely ever top the Providence loss. The Oklahoma St loss in the early 90's is up there as well. I really liked that team.

The losses to South Alabama and Loyola ripped my heart out. Of course I was a kid then and ball boy for a few games during that era.
Honestly though that is the last time I felt we were at the start of something special. I remember the Young and Rexless t-shirts, Friday morning tip off club breakfasts, throwing tennis balls at Dwayne Schintzius, Rejection Row and all the plaid. It was heaven.

I attended that game in Oakland against Loyola,so that was my greatest disappointment. We were the better team after Gathers went down. Wimp changed our entire strategy just to counter Loyola's offense. In hind sight we should have just played our regular game. We would have won. Playing hard defense against that helter skelter offense of Loyola wore our kids out and handicapped our offense. We came oh so close.

Is not believing in basketball. You are essentially saying you thought we could possibly be a top 30 program.
My answer is my hopes and dreams left with Kennedy Winston.

quote:I was there in Baton Rouge that night. We had the lead and the ball going down on a fast break with a couple of minutes left in the game. Leon Douglas is actually out in front of the break and takes the pass in front of Indiana's goal with All-American center Kent Benson running behind him. Benson has 4 fouls on him and instead going straight to the hole with the ball, Leon waits for Benson to catch up to try and foul him out with a 3-point play....problem is, Benson blocks the shot and Indiana gets the rebound. After that, it was ALL down hill. Scott May hits a jumper, Alabama misses on its trip while Indiana rebounds...etc.,etc. Me and my guys walked out of the gym that night feeling like we'd been run over by an 18-wheeler....AND we had to drive back to Tuscaloosa that night!

pretty sure Douglass was called for a charge when it clearly wasn't in the Indiana game so instead of us going to the line to go up 4, they get the ball and tie it up.
the showed film of the play in the CM Newton SEC Storied deal that did on him - first time I had seen it.

quote:You're probably right! I guess it's been too many years and beers since that night! I DO remember getting to the game late and us going in and sitting down among a bunch of Indiana fans, and Alabama already being down 6 or 7 points in the first couple of minutes when we got there. The Indiana fans were all rolling their eyes and laughing at us about the score, and we said, "hell, we're just down 7 right now?...it usually takes us 3 or 4 minutes to warm up!"....well right on key, Alabama caught fire and within a few minutes we were up a bucket! We didn't hear shite out of them the rest of the game, but they told us after the game that they were lucky as hell to have won and Alabama had a HELLUVA team.

Later we heard where Bobby Knight came in the Alabama locker room and told them that they were the best team they'd played ALL year (Michigan was great that year, too and Indiana had beaten them).

I remember the Wimp years. The tourney was given and we would usually get to the Sweet 16 and get beat there.

No, I am saying that when the season began, I had hopes and expectations we would build on last year's performance and improve at least a little bit. I never expected us competing to win the SEC, but i thought this team was good enough to land a 5-7 seed in the tourney if they showed that improvement.
