What will happen to Legion Field?

Apparently this is the final season of UAB football in Legion Field. With the next stadium scheduled to be ready in 2021, that'll be that for large venue events for the historic stadium. Has Birmingham announced what plans they have for it? It's such a historic field that saw some really great games played there over the years.

I hope they sell some souvenirs from it because I would buy one.
I love Legion Field and grew up going to games there. There is still something special about it to me. Saw many games at Legion probably as many as I have seen at BDS. Tons of memories and saw some of Bama's greatest games that were played there (and a couple of tough losses). I loved everything about it.
INB4 the dumbfrick millennial fans, Saban era bandwaggoners, non-Birmingham people who are going to tell me what shithole Legion is......

I’d imagine they’ll tear it down. A few high school games would be the only events that would still happen there.

Agreed. And it goes beyond Bama football, although those were the most memorable. UAB, bowl games, USFL, WLAF, CFL, XFL, DCI, concerts. I went to a LOT of events at Legion Field over the years, and have a lot of fond memories there.

Trash it.
Sure it served it's purpose, but has none anymore.
And before all you nostalgic types complain about it, think about this: The Yankee "House that Ruth Built" Stadium has been torn down. Don't act like Legion Field has anything on Yankee Stadium.

When I lived in Elyton PJs as a kid (couple of years), I despised Bama fans b/c them mofos would park EVERYWHERE.
I used to shoot hoops outside of LF, so those were my other memories.

What's the condition of Ladd Memorial in Mobile after 70 years? The Cramton Bowl in Montgomery is almost 100. And they've always been dinky, bush-league stadiums.
If the city gets rid of Legion Field, that just about makes B'ham about as Junior Varsity as these other 2 cities in football. In her day, she surely was, "The Football Capital of the South."

I was never hassled one time in any fashion at Legion Field in probably 40 games.
the ND sack? the kick? DT vs Penn St? first SEC Title game? 315? Stallings last game? the Tenn tie? Place was special.

Never had a problem until the very last game I saw at Legion in 2000 when I watched a Dubose led Bama squad lose 21-0 to Southern Miss. We came outside and all the windows were busted out of the car and everything stolen. Between the upper deck looking like it could collapse at any moment and the field level barb wire fencing, it definitely had character.
GOOD TIMES!

I saw some great games in Legion Field in my day. The Old Grey Lady is past her prime, but in her day, she was a bad arse and earned the Football Capital of the South moniker. I watched the first All-American Bowl there, the Birmingham Americans, the Birmingham Stallions, played in a Dental Clinic high school game there (astroturf is a BITCH!, saw an Iron Bowl there, and watched Alabama vanquish many a foe in Legion. I'll shed a sentimental tear when they close it down for good.

My last trip to Legion Field was in 87 or 88, in the rain, cold, and watched Fla beat Bama. They can blow it up.

LF has an enormous history, but much more significant stadiums have been torn down in the name of progress. Old Yankee Stadium, the Orange Bowl, Candlestick Park, and Texas Stadium to name a few.
LF may or may not last a while longer, but more historic places have seen dynamite and bulldozers. It's definitely not untouchable.

Didn't all those cities replace those stadiums with something bigger and better? What's B'ham putting up? A parking lot?

What could they put there? Makes no sense to keep maintaining it with the new stadium. Raze it and redevelop the land.

A LOT of good memories there! I was fortunate enough to play 2 games there in HS in what was called the Dental Clinic Classic. Witnessed a lot of great college players and games as well. Emmitt Smith at UF, Biscuit and the sack, being a walk on there at UA and watching Siran Stacy scorch Tenn in '89.
I think most of the high schools around the area now, have their own stadiums and I think a few even use the B'ham Southern field. As much as it pains me to say it, The Old Grey Lady needs to be razed and the land and parking area re developed.
I used to love walking up or walking into the stadium and hear the great Simpson Pepper announce the "Legion Field stadium time is....."

I played in a soccer game in July at Legion Field when they still had the astro turf. I still have a slight scar on my thigh from sliding on that hot astro turf. That strawberry took 3 months to heal. Most miserable soccer game I've ever played. including after an ice storm in Memphis a few years later.
That game was supposed to be played on the Stallions practice field next to the stadium, but a few days before the scheduled game, that grass got a fungus or something and died. This was the Alabama Sports Festival around 84 or 85.

Last news I remember seeing was that the city was keeping it and that the Magic City Classic was staying there. Personally, I think it's foolish for the city to maintain for just one event each year.
