Patrick Surtain has a Corner spot on lock, and Jordan Battle will play Safety. Beyond that, how is it looking?

Josh Jobe seems likely across from Surtain, and Ronald Williams is coming in from Junior College so perhaps he'll play Star?

At the other Safety spot I suppose Daniel Wright is the favorite? What about the Dime DB/Money?

Have to look back at the end of last year for indicators. Demarco Hellams played some in the Auburn game and the bowl game. I think he'll challenge Wright but both will be on the field in dime.

I halfway expect Surtain to play star and have Jobe and Williams on the outside when we're in Nickel. Saban likes to play a great athlete there. Minkah, Milliner, Arenas have all played star.

Surtain, Jobe, Battle, Wright are a good bet for the base 4.

Hellams is probably the third safety heading into week one and Williams the third corner- but Jalyn Armour Davis or Brandon Turnage could be a surprise there.

Brian Branch will eventually carve out a big role in the defense, he's too good to keep on the bench for long, but safety and star are very complex positions in this defense so he's way behind the 8 ball

I think PS2 moves to star, Jobe and Ronald Williams will handle the corner. I think this the year that Jobe puts it all together, has all the talent in the world to be all conference.

Safety, we know Battle has one spot. I believe Wright will man the other spot and Hellams will be the man at money. I can see Branch challenging for a spot and possibly starting.

Rise is right. I think the juco guy... Is not locked to start though. HOw many time we've seen a juco come in and barely play his first year?

Our JuCo OL recruiting has largely been a disaster. The rest of our JuCo recruiting has been solid.

Yes. That link supports my position. With the exception of James Carpenter our JuCo OL recruiting has been total crap, but elsewhere we have had a good bit of success.

The only JuCo WR we have signed is Duron Carter, who was always just a roll of the dice on a talented player with a lot of personal faults. They listed Travell Dixon as a WR but he was a DB and left the team during the summer before what would have been his first season.

The only JuCo TE we have signed is Ty Fluornoy-Smith unless I have forgotten about someone.

On the DL we have signed Terrence Cody, Jesse Williams, Jarran Reed, DJ Pettway, and Isaiah Buggs but you want to focus on Jonathan Taylor? Come on now.

And I'm not saying that Ronald Williams is going to be a star player for us or anything. It is definitely more likely than not that he will have a significant role on our defense this season though.

Our JUCO recruiting on the defensive side of the ball has been stellar for the most part. I expect Williams to play and play alot this year and next at CB.

As far as the secondary this season: I'll go with Surtain, Jobe and Williams starting at corner and star and Battle and Wright at safety. Hellams at Money. Turnage as my dark-horse to steal someone's spot. Branch could make a move as well once he learns the defense later in the season.

JuCo CBs and DLs have been fine for Bama mostly, though guys like Jamar King and Tevita Musika lately were seemingly offered for depth than upside. How late they were added lends to that.

Not to say Ronald Williams was Plan A for Bama at CB, but most teams started on him around September/October. Saban likes that more physically developed and/or "experienced" JuCo CB to lean on to stabilize a secondary.

Just stay away from JuCO OL, I cannot harp on that enough

Our JuCo recruiting defensively has basically performed to their expectations or better

GOOD/PERFORMED TO EXPECTATION
- Terrence Cody (2008) (All-Conference starter)
- DeQuan Menzie (2010) (solid starter)
- Jesse Williams (2011) (All-Conference starter)
- Quinton Dial (2011) (solid rotational)
- Deion Belue (2012) (solid starter)
- Jarran Reed (2014) (All-Conference starter)
- DJ Pettway (2014) (solid rotational)
- Jamar King (2016) (wasn't great but gave us exactly what we expected for a late addition depth filler)
- Isaiah Buggs (2017) (All-Conference starter)
- Tevita Musika (2018) (wasn't great but gave us exactly what we expected for a late addition depth filler)

BAD/UNDERPERFORMED
- Brandon Lewis (2010) (moved to TE)
- Travell Dixon (2011) (left before season, transferred to Washington)
- Jonathan Taylor (2015) (we all know)
- Saivion Smith (2018) (never figured it out)

Impressive list. I believe Quinton Dial was actually a solid starter for us. Spent alot of years in the NFL as well.

I'll never forget him knocking the soul out of Aaron Murray in the 2012 SECCG.

Wow, that’s crazy. Played enough to seem like a starter in my memory.

He played a lot like Nick Gentry also did, both were very good subbed in pass rushers.

Only know because I looked into it his draft year, made it all the more impressive getting drafted.

I like Josh Jobe at the other corner. But he is a little volatile and inconsistent at times. I thought he matched up well against Michigan in the bowl but he also got away with a launching targeting call. I don't mind him being physical, he just has to be smart about it. Jalyn Armour-Davis will get on the field. Intel says he's pretty good at star as well. Without a doubt, this season feels like we need our JUCO All American, Ronald Williams, to come through big time. Maybe DeQuan Menzie big time.

Banks is probably on most Bama fans can't miss list. He played a lot of dime for us and should be even better this season. Frankly, this is a scary position to try to predict. Young, young, young. Daniel Wright feels like the man to me. But, Hellams isn't chopped liver. If there was a position that desperately needed spring reps on our defense and maybe more than anywhere on the entire team it was safety.
