Plenty of vol fans up there and divided families. Wish you well. Coach Bryant schooled my generation very well. I lived on Parkway and spent a lot of time around Hazel Green area as well. Used to be a lot of retina-burning orange and cotton fields up there in my day.

I grew up in Hunstville too. My Dad was an Arky grad, but he loved Coach Bryant and Bama fb too. His best buddy was a UT grad and his son and I were close friends. We always went to TSIO games together in Bham and Kville. There was mutual respect between UA and UT as rivals back then. But Phat Phil destroyed that.

I guess back then just being young gave us a lot in common. Plenty of guys I hung around and played ball with liked the Big Orange and a few guys played there. I remember Bill Battle visiting our school and thinking, how in the world could you go to Knoxville?

But it was really a different attitude and folks just handled this rivalry with a lot more class. You may remember how big coach Bryant was on showing that quality. He even would put the Bama fans on notice. Now, on my trips to Baton Rouge, I was just trying to get out of there alive.

We moved to Northeast Tennessee in 1995 and I graduated high school and left in 2003.

If you are over the age of 21 and know the history of that period you understand why the hate will never, ever, ever leave.

I imagine some of that was that you had to live through the vol's winning streak. Tough stuff. I lived in Northwest Tenn around Jackson and we at least were handling the rivalry with Jay Barker and David Palmer's championship group. I left back to Bama after Peyton's freshman loss. Thank goodness. They were insufferable enough even when they lost.

This.

I lived through the Fulmer/Kramer era.

I hope UT never wins a game ever again for the infinite future and they have to shut down not just the football program but that entire worthless university.

I hope none of their athletic teams- even the intramural ones- ever win a game in any sport.

And I hope all their fans get the worst cases of hemorrhoids in medical history.

With Auburn, I don't mind them winning enough to keep a crappy coach like Gus around, even if he occasionally beats us. Tennessee, I don't ever want to win a single game. I want the city of Knoxville to be razed and the ground upon which it was built to be salted so that nothing green or beautiful can ever grow there.

I don't hate Auburn. I just don't.

It's a fine school and a fine town. They literally are little brother. I don't mind them having success and don't actively pull for them to lose unless it benefits Alabama. They've got a subset of fans that are pretty obnoxious but then again so do we.

Growing up, I was ambivalent towards Tennessee. That changed with Fat Phil and the TennStud crowd. It wasn't that we got busted - Dubose ran a bad program. It was that Tennessee was literally doing the exact same things and Phil shamelessly jailhouse informed his way out of it. It would have been one thing for them to have been relatively clean and turn informant, but they weren't anything close. They were paying Tee Martin WITH CHECKS and got a pass because they informed on us.

I kinda like Auburn being decent/good, especially in sports other than football (hoops are a prime example). It looks good for the state and helps keep Bama on our toes.

I don't care if Tennessee loses every game in every sport they play. Frick them.

Anytime I begin to feel sympathetic towards Tennessee, I think of Fat Phil and that awful song "Rocky Top".
Then I go right back to hating them

Damn right I choose to hate those orange bastards. I can tolerate Auburn but Tennessee deserves where they are as a program.

It's been a long time since Tennessee was any good. I think a lot of younger fans just don't understand how truly awful that fan base is when they are winning. Make LSU look like choir boys.
My best friend is a huge Tennessee fan. We have only known each other since 2008. He has never known Tennessee as anything better than an 8 win team. Still, he has one of the most severe superiority complexes when it comes to his team that I've ever seen.

I was just starting to feel a little empathy for the Viles. Then they hired Phat Phil for AD. if you didn't experience the Fulmer/Manning/Tee Martin years, you have no idea how obnoxious Rocky Top can be. I agree, when I was younger, it was a respectful rivalry. Fulmer killed that. We were cheating, but Fulmer was doing the same thing and getting away with it with the blessing of the NCAA.

I hate Auburn worse, growing up near B'ham, but UT moved a lot closer to #1 during those years and LSU is gaining on both. But just so we're clear, frick UT! frick AUBURN! and frick LSU!

I hate them both. I hate Auburn much much more but I still hate them both.

It really bothers me to see Pruitt in orange on Saturday

When they play I want them both to loose every single game.

When they play each other I can’t pull for either team to win so I wind up hoping a Very small meteor or a large airliner crashes into the stadium, or for a terrorist organization to step up and make a statement.

Fatty Fulmer may have gotten fired but the damage he did to our image and our sports program was incalculable. He put us in sports purgatory for over 10 years. Which other program has done that to us?
Alabama-Tennessee was a great rivalry even bigger than with Awbarn; he destroyed it for personal glory.
And lest anyone has forgotten he was cheating his arse off the whole time and Laughing about it.

There are not enough beatdowns of the Vols to make me forget or forgive what that hillbilly program tried to do to us. I grew up respecting Tennessee, even when Manning was there. Now I want that program to never see a ray a sunlight ever again. Their stadium is a throne of lies with the way they pack people in there. They set up their schedule so they can have inflated winning streaks at the end of every year. I want Fulmer to go to his oversize grave one day knowing his time on Planet Earth resulted in his hated rival having the greatest dynasty in CFB history and his beloved Vols will forever roaming through the wilderness of college football.

A little harsh but I hate Tennessee.

I hate Auburn because it just comes naturally. I hope they are on the losing end of any competitive contest they enter into. I hope they lose every sporting event, including club and intramural sports. I hope they lose their academic accreditation. I hope mad cow disease and equine flu breaks out in their Animal Sciences Ag program. I hate them.

I feel sorry for UT now, honestly. My disdain for them was palpable back during the Fulmer years and the first few years afterwards, but then I just began to pity them.

I most certainly do. Frankly, back to "Cholly Mac" and Charles Alexander "the Great" and back to the likes of Tommy Casanova and Bert Jones. The common thread of Nick Saban, are you kidding? When the Cajuns are humming this rivalry in the west has gone nuclear.

Not all rivalries are measured the same and shouldn't be. Tennessee is Tennessee with all its historical content for guys that dig history and tradition. The barn is in-state and always the little brother and in the wild west. LSU will be back, too much talent to stay low for long, and frankly, they don't suffer from the persecution complex of a Texas A&M, but it's freakin' close.

Lots of room for SEC rivalries that are just different in content and context for my money.
