Was promoting tosh and locksley to coordinators

To keep them on staff, and thus keep that recruiting class together, worth the mediocre to bad jobs they did last season? Sure we blew almost everybody out until the post season, but we had a massive talent advantage against everybody (we were more talented than Clemson last year, but they had a massive coordinator coaching advantage). When it got tough and the injuries started pulling up, and the talent levels of the opposition got closer, there was no excellent coaching there to compensate with scheme and adjustments

I think Locksley did well but I think Tosh was out of his depth. I think one of the reasons Tosh might've been promoted was to keep him from being poached by other schools...but I think Locksley was chosen more for continuity and he'd had prior experience as an OC...

I believe it to be true more so for Tosh than for Locksley. Tosh had those West Coast connections and seemed to be a good position coach BUT had no experience as a DC. Locksley though, had prior play calling duties at previous stops and had been on staff in some capacity.

I also think Locksley did an excellent job overall, and is likely still our OC if the Maryland job hadn't come open.
Tosh's problem seemed to be calling games in the moment, and that may have taken everyone by surprise.
But yeah, recruiting was prioritized over Xs and Os for sure, but I think Saban thought the staff was still good enough coaching-wise. Maybe it was if we had stayed healthy on D...

Locksley was a good OC until he wasn't. I hope we've learned a valuable lesson by now abut using coordinators that have taken another job.

His only failure was between the 10 and the goal line in Santa Clara, and even that looks to be mostly player error upon rewatching the game.
Could he have done a better job game-planning in December and January, perhaps. But if we punch it in the endzone the 5 times we got inside the 10 against Clemson, then no one is upset at Locksley. We always moved the football well in every game he coached.

Agree. I hated to see Locksley go. It also took away an elite recruiter.

I think Locks made one fatal error in his coaching/game planning. He should have seen in the State film that defenses were onto him and what he and Tua were doing and adjusted. He didn’t. That plus the injuries to Tua put us in a very predictable pattern with a stationary QB and the last few teams we played (which were also the best teams we played) teed off on Bama.

This is potentially a fair point, but Bama employs numerous analysts whose job it is to catch this very thing. If this was not caught, the failure lies at the foot of many people, not just Locksley.

Mississippi State just had an ultra elite defense last year and Tua was unhealthy. We could have done better for sure but they were just on their game and that defense was really good.

Didn't they have 4 first rounders on defense?

I don't remember how many went in the first but that front seven of theirs last year was terrifying.

It certainly didn't take me by surprise, so I don't know why it took anyone else by surprise. With absolutely zero experience calling a game, I had no confidence in him at all from day 1.

He sucked all year long. I never understood why anyone thought he was doing a good job.

I think most of us were really hoping he would be the next Kirby. Spend many years as the DC while being a great recruiter.
I think Saban got a little soft last year with the staff. It kind of showed with all those "co" positions. Those titles were really just appeasements and that promoted entitlement and complacency.
But the best thing about Saban and what I believe makes him so great in general is that he learns from these type of mistakes and tackles them head on. He quickly addressed the problems right after the game and I'm glad to see some older guys like Sal returning.
I certainly hope this years coaching staff is more focused on winning games than coaching titles for their resumes.
