Fifty years ago, Wendell Hudson stepped foot on The University of Alabama campus as its first African American scholarship athlete, helping to open doors for generations to come. To honor him and his legacy, Alabama Athletics will welcome back Hudson on Saturday, February 15 and hold a halftime recognition and jersey retirement at the men's basketball game versus LSU. While the number 20 will remain in circulation, Hudson's jersey will become the first in Alabama Athletics' history to be retired.

Wendell Hudson was the biggest GET of the CM Newton era. I miss Big Leon and "Mule" King. Grown azz men.

Yep. That 75-76 team with Douglas, King, & TR Dunn was the best ever at Bama. Came damn close to beating Indiana’s undefeated team in the tourney that year; Bobby Knight later said that’s the best team he’s ever played against...

Great! He's a good man, and he deserves it!
I played against him and Raymond Odums once in an independent league basketball game in Tuscaloosa after Wendell had retired from the Bulls. He was actually wearing ankle weights, and he and Raymond had a ball running us into the ground. My best memory of it all was that I was playing a baseline corner in our 2-3 zone defense. Wendell comes down and sets up along the baseline on my side about 20 ft. away from the rim. One of their guards put up a jumper from the top of the key, and I step into the paint and put my best box-out move on Wendell. The shot is off, hits the rim and goes high above it (here's where things slowed down in my mind). I took my step toward the rim and went up as high as I could for the rebound. As I get to the top of my jump and reach out for the rebound, I see, first a pair of hands, then elbows and finally an armpit sailing over me, grabbing the ball with both hands, then gently pushing it down and through from well above the rim. As all the hollering and laughter subsided and we headed back down court, all I could see was those damn ankle weights flopping against his ankles! Raymond Odums also gave our point guard (had played at Sou. Miss) a nightmare he he'd never forget.

They could very well be. Anthony Murray and TR were lockdown defensive guys. Knight's undefeated team with Scott May, Kent Benson, Quinn Buckner, was the best Indiana team he ever coached. We were good.

That's amazing. If I'm remembering correctly, Scott May was Player of the Year also.

TR Dunn was the most 'graceful" basketball player I've ever seen. The guy's head and shoulders never moved on the court...he actually seemed to float, and he was truly a lockdown defensive player. His defense kept him in the league for a long time.

I know bama went so cold to open that game and then somewhat figured them out...but if Bama plays them 10xs, Bama wins 7 of them against IU in 75/76

They were and when we got to our seats, Bama was down 8-10 points I think. Some Indiana fans around us kinda smirked and said they weren't surprised. We smiled at them and said "don't worry, we'll get loose and be right with you. Just about then Alabama caught fire and tied it up in about about 3 minutes, and you could see them cutting their eyes over at us when it happened.
The turning point in the game came late with Alabama up a couple of points and their All-American center Kent Benson had 4 fouls. Alabama got a break-away on a turnover and Leon Douglas (our center) was ahead of everyone down court. We got him the ball with about 3 steps ahead Benson, but instead of putting in in, he waited on Benson to try to draw his 5th foul. Well Benson blocked Douglas's shot and Indiana came up with the rebound. At that point, things went south for Alabama. It's really amazing how a game can completely turn on one play.
My buddies and I left the arena with tickets for the finals on Saturday. It was gonna be between #1 Indiana and #2 Marquette. We stopped on the way out of town and swapped our 4 tickets for............4 hot McDonald's apple pie turnovers!

Best game I ever saw in person was the double-overtime win vs. Tennessee at home. Douglas, Grunfeld, and BKing all fouled out. Three buzzer-beaters...Greg McElveen had a put-back at the buzzer for us I think to send it to OT, I think Mike Jackson for Tennessee sent it to the second overtime, and Ricky Brown with about a 12 footer in the closing seconds to win it.

MIke Jackson was a helluva player for that Tennessee team, but King-Grunfeld got all the press. He averaged 17 PPG on that team.

That was a helluva game (I was there, too) and a helluva Alabama team. Douglas, King, Dunn and Brown were all drafted by the NBA. Douglas, King and Dunn had careers in the league.
Speaking of Tennessee back then, do you remember Coach Ray Mears bringing his teams out of the locker room just before tipoff with the kid riding the unicycle while spinning basketballs in each hand to the tune "Sweet Georgia Brown"?...and his imp-like assistant Stu Aberdeen? With them along with Grunfeld and King, they really put on a show!
And folks now don't believe that Alabama can fill a 15,000 seat arena with any regularity. Just put the product on the floor, and watch!

I remembered all of that and that Aberdeen left to become a head coach somewhere. I had to look it up...he went to Marshall and dies of a heart attack after only two seasons.
