Tua ready to compete with Jalen

Tua's dad:
“To watch Jalen Hurts just tear things up, awesome season, and I felt like I needed to talk to Tua and reconfirm to see if that’s what he really wants,” Galu Tagovailoa said.
“He said, ‘Dad, if I’m going to play for the best team, if I’m going to be the best, then I have to compete against the best. I can’t second-guess myself.’ I said if he was set with his mind then let’s make it happen.”

If he is as advanced as a passer as he looks, and if Jalen has not made strides in that area, then I can see it being a contest. If jalen has improved, then I doubt Saban is going to want to go through the true freshman growing pains again. The only reason hurts could win it last year was noone else on the roster had any significant experience either. In that scenario it might have been beneficial to him to have played ball the previous fall instead of having sat on the bench for 2 or 3 years

Do we just assume the other kid has no shot?

No we don't assume anything about a true freshman. Jalen was creating buzz even before his first spring practice. Jalen had the best ADay performance out of all the QBs.
After ADay, I said Jalen was the best QB on the roster (and got slammed by everyone on the board for saying it).
We'll see how Tua does, but my money says that he falls on his face during his first ADay like most true freshmen do. I won't count him out, but remember that Jalen won the job because of his athleticism and poise. Tua isn't near the athlete Jalen is, so he'll have to come in and light it up throwing the ball, which is much harder for a freshman to do than running it.

It will be necessary to play either he or Jones early this year. That's why he really has a chance. He will probably not get enough playing time to beat out Hurts but I won't completely rule it out. I was pretty vocal in my criticism of the passing game last year but I have faith in Jalen to perform much better. I refuse to believe he is another Brandon Harris.

Come on man, at least half this board thought that Jalen looked like the best QB after last year's A-day.
But I 100% agree with rest of your post.

Hmmm, Ok.

Then why am I hearing nothing but good things about Jones? Not saying he's going to start or anything but I think the backup job is a wide open competition and assuming anything could be a mistake.

Hmmm, Ok.
My mistake. I was actually on a different board last year, and that's why I came over here

Not sure if I agree with your "Tua is nowhere near the athlete Jalen is" statement.
Not sure if you are real, either.

Tua runs a 4.7x
Jalen runs a 4.48
Tua can run, but not anything like Jalen

Jalen may be a little better runner, although Tua looks pretty good running it to me. They are virtually the same exact size. If Hurts runs a 4.5 and Tua runs a 4.6 or 4.7 that's close enough that the best passer likely wins the job assuming both can grasp the offense. Look I expect Hurts to start, but nobody can deny that his lack of down the field passing really handicapped our offense in certain spots last year. That leaves the door cracked just enough for Tua to make a serious run if he's a quick learner and a more gifted passer, which is yet to be determined.
And Jones is a legit QB as well as soon as he adds about 20 pounds to his noodle-like frame. We're really fortunate to have 3 quality QB's that could all start at different programs.

I definitely don't want to see (and I'll bet Saban doesn't either) another true freshman QB running the team. The only thing worse would be if we had a glorified RB in the QB spot and didn't use half the offense because of it. Best case scenario is that Hurts learns how to throw a football to a running receiver sometime in the next 5 months.

He did it plenty of times last year. He did it in the first game of the season, and the last game of the season, and pretty much every game in between. Was he consistent in every game? No. But he knows how to do it.

You and I have different definitions of "plenty."

Plenty enough times for us to know that he definitely can complete passes to running WRs.

This is a half full ; half empty debate but the fact is Hurts struggled mightily in the passing game last year and turnovers. We all expect him to improve but will it be enough to run Daboll's system?

True. Jeremy Johnson and Brandon Harris completed some downfield passes once in a while. For that matter, Spencer Pennington completed a few.
The key, of course, is to complete enough, consistently enough, to make the defense defend the entire field rather than bull rushing the qb, who rolls out and throws away the ball. Complete enough passes to sustain some drives. 3 plays and out, giving the other team 99 plays per game, and you're going to get beat vs a good team.
It isn't, though, only the lack of a passing game. He needs to learn to read defenses before and after the snap. Hopefully he will.
