How things stand with uncommitted 2022 five-stars

quote:

DT WALTER NOLEN

The five-star defensive tackle recently released a top 10 but there are definitely some bigger standouts even among that group with Alabama and LSU probably leading the way at this point. That could change, though, once Nolen could get on the road if the NCAA lifts the dead period after May 31 since he wants to see Clemson and Florida as soon as possible. Ohio State is going to be a serious player as well and Nolen’s coach at Cordova (Tenn.) St. Benedict is former Tennessee linebacker Marlon Walls so the Vols could play a big factor but Nolen’s relationship is just starting with new Tennessee coach Josh Heupel.

CB DENVER HARRIS

Alabama, LSU, Texas and Texas A&M are the final four programs for Harris, who had others like Ohio State and Clemson involved earlier in his recruitment but now he's focused on these four powerhouses. The Longhorns and Aggies have been showing the most attention in recent weeks as coaches Steve Sarkisian and Jimbo Fisher have stepped up their involvement with Harris but the chatter around Harris is that the three SEC programs could be slightly more in focus than Texas at this point.

OT JULIAN ARMELLA

Alabama, Clemson, Florida State, LSU, Ohio State, Miami and Florida are the top seven for Armella, who said it’s going to be crucial to take visits before making any decisions and so that could delay a choice until he can get to some out-of-state programs. He is a Florida State legacy and lives close to the Miami campus so those will be factors to consider but the chatter over the last many weeks is that Alabama and LSU could have a slight edge in his recruitment at this point. The Crimson Tide’s track record of developing offensive linemen is not lost on Armella, who sees similar success at LSU plus he’s noticed how hard position coach James Cregg has been recruiting him to Baton Rouge.

OT ZACH RICE

Virginia and North Carolina have taken a major leap forward in the competition to land the five-star offensive tackle from Lynchburg (Va.) Liberty Christian as this looks to be a contest between the two ACC programs at this point. National programs like Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State, Notre Dame and others are not out of this yet but it looks like the Cavaliers and Tar Heels have especially captured Rice’s attention and his commitment to either program would be a major recruiting coup.

WR KEVIN COLEMAN

Alabama, Oregon, USC, Texas, Georgia, Penn State, Florida State and Arizona State made the top eight for Coleman, who said Saturday night at the Pylon event in Bullhead City, Ariz., that it’s fair to say the Crimson Tide have an edge in his recruitment. The five-star also said everyone still has a shot to land his commitment and that he only narrowed it to eight schools because he and his family were most comfortable with those programs. Oregon and some others are also high.

re: Tide FB Recruiting & Roster
quote:

OLB SHAWN MURPHY

Alabama, Clemson, Florida, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oregon, Georgia and Penn State made the top eight for Murphy but the Buckeyes could have a decently-sized edge to land the five-star linebacker. The Buckeyes have already landed a stellar group at LB in the 2022 class but Murphy is still highly interested, a former teammate, Tyleik Williams, signed with Ohio State in 2021 and he’s a high priority for the coaching staff. Alabama is making a big move and then Penn State and Georgia should be watched as well.

re: Tide FB Recruiting & Roster

In-state DL Khurtiss Perry draws comparison to Quinnen Williams (BOL, segments)
quote:

One of Bama’s top targets in the 2022 class is Montgomery (AL) Park Crossing defensive tackle Khurtiss Perry. The in-state standout has long been on UA's radar, offering in the summer of 2019 prior to Perry’s sophomore season...

Alabama's staff has been after Perry consistently. He’s in some type of communication with his area recruiter Charles Kelly or defensive line coach Freddie Roach every day, and talks to Nick Saban twice month.

“He likes the type of player I am,” Perry said of Saban’s message. “He tells me that I’m a great player and have great get-off. He just tells me about the great things I do. He also tells me some of the things I could get better at. He also tells me to continue to be a leader.”

Perry’s junior stats were eye-popping as he racked up 174 tackles, including 58 tackles for a loss, and 15 sacks. “Coach Saban told me that I dominated the last two seasons and he loved that,” Perry said. “He also told me that I’m a game-changing player.” Perry says Saban has compared him to Quinnen Williams on a couple of occasions...

Another part of the Tide program Perry has taken notice of is the strength and conditioning element. “For me, I see they have a great staff with their conditioning team,” Perry said. “They’re improving in their numbers that they weren’t doing a couple years back. I see their players getting bigger and stronger each week. I see they’re improving.”

Perry is rated the No. 6 DT and No. 64 overall player in the country, per the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

4* DL Khurtiss Perry • 6-2/250 AL hudl

Haven't heard much about Walter Nolen on the LSU side lately. Know that O is heavily pursuing but no articles or interviews as of late.

Well your intel on Bear Alexander was spot on so I assume Nolen will be committing to LSU by 2:00 PM today.

Coleman's Junior film is pretty good for 4 games, had 12 TDs in that span.

He's really frickin good, the Sanders comparison is almost spot on...

Rivals is releasing their updated Rivals 250 this afternoon. Seeing as the state of Alabama doesn't have anyone ranked in their Top 22 we should see quite a few guys rankings being released today.

TWatts nugget:
quote:

I've seen some asking for an update on Ty Simpson and here is what we have so far: Alabama is definitely in it deep. Bill O'Brien has made a great impression per multiple sources and probably helped UA's chances as much as anything the last month or so.

Before the UT coaching changes, many had labeled him a likely Vol commitment with Clemson running second. That's obviously changed and now it appears to be an Alabama/Clemson battle with the Tigers very much involved as well. I've spoken to a couple different sources around Clemson, and one felt Clemson might hold the slight lead and another felt Clemson was slightly behind.

Tennessee is also still in communication along with Ole Miss. I haven't heard as much about UT or Ole Miss at this stage. Right now I put it pretty close to 50/50 between Alabama and Clemson. It is possible something new emerges with UT or Ole Miss, but until then I think the Tide and Tigers are in the best position.

I do know that everyone involved feels they have a good connection to Simpson and his family, which is to be expected with everyone in agreement they've handled the recruiting process right. Still a few days to go and with recruiting it can twist and turn in many directions in 72 hours, but we will be digging to see what else shakes out.

re: Tide FB Recruiting & Roster
Fact or Fiction: Henry To’o To’o will end up at Alabama

quote:

1. Henry To’o To’o will end up at Alabama.

Farrell’s take: FACT. I’m just putting pieces together here and when I see a few Alabama linebackers hit the transfer portal around the same time that rumors began to swirl that Henry To'o To'o had quietly committed to Alabama and all signs point toward the Crimson Tide. I thought Oregon and Ohio State would be major factors here but Alabama was his second choice out of high school and signs are pointing the way of Tuscaloosa.

Gorney’s take: FACT. I don’t know if the decisions of Ale Kaho and Ben Davis to enter the transfer portal were directly tied to To’o To’o coming to play for the Crimson Tide or that neither really caught on as expected with that program. But I was told by a source close to To’o To’o that it was “supposed to be Alabama” for the former Tennessee linebacker and that’s big news. He can fly around the field and it’s just another turn of the knife for Tennessee since To’o To’o should stay in the conference.

Mind of Mike: Thoughts on updated Rivals250 rankings

quote:

PROSPECTS THAT JUST MISSED A FIFTH STAR

Here are some prospects that I think are just on the cusp of that fifth star.

QB Ty Simpson — He’s accurate and smooth. He just needs to get a bit stronger and with that will come a bit more zip on the ball but he can be special.

CB Jeadyn Lukas — Lukas has great speed and excellent instincts, and is battling for his place in a very elite cornerback class.

WR CJ Williams — I like Williams as a big receiver with an excellent catch radius who is hard to bring down but not playing this past season hurt a bit.

LB Gabe Powers — The only issue with Powers is he keeps getting bigger and is now kind of a tweener between linebacker and defensive end.

DE Dani Dennis-Sutton — Not getting to play this past season because of his home state shutting down football is probably the only reason why Sutton isn’t a five-star yet. He’s certainly got the power and frame to be dominant.

LB Dasan McCullough — McCullough is a quick-twitch kid who needs to get a bit thicker and reminds me of Terrence Lewis, who eventually got his fifth star.

LB Harold Perkins — He’s tall, long and thin, and needs to add size and strength but his athleticism is there.
