I assume you are excluding 2007

The offense is different, also. We are very quick strike. That style offense will always lead to inflated defensive snaps.

Nope. The last three were just too good to be true. Our defense may not be as elite as the last three but it's good. The offense being so unstoppable more than makes up for the defense slipping a bit.

Last year we struggled with aTm

the good news is we have a few easy teams coming up to get more young guys playing time thus building depth

Because Hurts can't pass....
I liked the adjustments we made at the half to bottle up Monde. I thought they made some nice adjustments and played well. I think they will find their identity as the season progresses.

The ILBs are not playing to the standard.

It took Reuben until his senior year to play really well iirc. Chris Allen went down and Lewis too. We will have to manage.

A&M put up like 550 yards against Clemson FWIW
Coming into the game they had the #5 offense in the nation despite having played Clemson and had the leading rusher in the SEC.
The leading rusher got 31 yards for the day, they had 13 points at the half, and finished the game 200 yards under their per-game average.
Melting about the defense is a textbook first world problem.

This D is already better than 2007, 2008, 2010, 2014. May be better than 2012 and 2017 by years' end.
Held A&M, statistically one of the best offenses in the country who put up 500 yards on Clemson, to 16 pts and ~240 yards through 3 qtrs. Half of the 240 was QB runs and scrambles. Then the starters began playing a lesser role in the rotations, especially the DL. Yeah, then A&M tacked on another 150 in garbage time.
Bama stoned A&M's regular running and passing game while the game was still "on the line". Also, made two great ints. The ILBs are not as strong as the other units but they are improving. It seems to be a mental thing that should improve with experience. Not sure about Mack's foot. The secondary has been a very pleasant and needed surprise as has Q Williams. Kulikowski is doing a great job.

Based on an incredibly worthless stat
Posted on 9/23/18 at 8:26 pm to nb200016
1) This defense is pretty stout. It's faced 2 top tier offenses in Ole Miss and TAMU and held both in check. They won't be really tested again until November. Even then, I'm not sure we'll face a formidable challenge. Maybe Fitz and the State Dawgs test us. Auburn can't find a running game and LSU has an adequate game manager playing QB but are leaning heavily on a rushing attack.
2) This defense is on the field more and a lot quicker than past defenses. Our offense is scoring quick strike style. We aren't driving the ball and chewing up clock. Consequently, this defense is facing more snaps in the game. Of course, they are going to give up more stats...except the one that really matters: points.
3) They don't have to be epic, not yet anyway. Isn't that a great luxury to have and enjoy? Don't worry, defense, Tua and the boys got this. They will put up 50 so if you give up a few, it won't matter like it did in the past.

Challenge is obviously in comparison to others, but we will have to show up and compete against their offense.
We won't against ULL, Arkansas or Tennessee.
Honestly, Missouri is a bigger offensive threat than LSU IMHO.

The Georgia game yesterday should have been much closer. Missouri played about as bad as possible and still hung in the game.

Missouri may not be a challenge if our secondary keeps playing like they currently are. But, Missouri does utilize the TE in the passing game so hopefully that will give our LBs more experience.

Total defense is an incredibly misleading statistic to base the efficacy of your defense on. Same with total offense for O.
I’ve been following Bill Connelly’s S&P+ model for about five years now. It’s a much better statistical model imo mainly because it negates stats from “garbage time.” This means the game stats are much less relevant if your team is up by 28 in the first, 24 in the second, 21 in the third, or 16 in the fourth. The reason is because those margins are when teams are often altering their game plans and running schemes they normally wouldn’t run. Winning teams are likely running the ball more or playing more reserve players to get them experience. Losing teams are attempting to pass much more in an attempt to catch up and this predictable strategy means defenses can pin their ears back and tee off on a QB. Under this definition, the latest we’ve entered garbage time in any given game is 10:03 left in the third quarter against TAMU. The other three games were all in garbage time at some point in the 2nd quarter.
That being said, we currently have the 11th ranked defense in the current overall S&P+ model. Not up to our normal Bama standard really, but it’s still early. The good news? We have the current 1st place offense in that same model. Even better news? Of the 10 teams ranked ahead of us on defense, only one of them boasts a top ten offense...Clemson at 9th (defense is also 9th).
So while some of us may be a tad concerned the defense isn’t exactly up to snuff (I believe it’s too early to tell and the offensive success has a bit to do with it too), I don’t see many teams that can even threaten us statistically speaking.
Still, the games aren’t played on paper. Still gotta line em up and snap the ball for 60 minutes. Looking forward to what’s in our future though.

I'd go far as to say Mizzou would have been kicking UGA's arse if they could have cut out the stupid mistakes (WR fumbling, blocked punt, WR tipping the ball up for an INT, etc).
